1st Merriam!

    I shot my first merriam this afternoon! I spotted 2 tom’s in a pasture, so I proceeded to sneak around them using nice deep draws to my advantage. I called periodically them found a finger off the hill to sit on. There was very little cover on top, but the yucca as a backdrop was enough. As I was working the birds I couldn’t see them, but I had 2 other tom’s running in to my calls from 1/2 mile away. As I watched the far birds the 2 close ones gobbled. I gave em a few kee kee calls and they came within 20 yards. I shot the first one, after he was down,his buddy proceeded to beat him up. I pulled up, but I decided I would save my 2nd tag for my bow.Our season runs until may 20th.

    I moved out here to SD in Feb, and days like today remind me how cool it is here!

    I forgot to add the vital statistics. The beard was 9″,weight 20.5, spurs 7/8″.
