Bummed out!!!

So, about 8 months ago my dad’s insurance guy was telling us about all the turkeys his cousins have on their farms in zone 462. I sent him an email later that day and was wondering what the chances of us going down there to hunt are? He responded that it was no problem at all, in fact they’d like more hunters on their farms to get rid of some of them…sounded good to me.

I told him we’d apply, but I doubted we’d get picked the first year. Well, low and behold, we got drawn. I was pumped to get my dad, who’s 70, and has never been turkey hunting, out once, while he still can. I have gone a few times, and have gotten lucky…that’s all it was was luck, as I’m not that good at calling etc….

Anyway, I wanted to get down this week and take a look around at the farms we were going to be hunting(462D is our zone and starts next Thursday)….the insurance guy calls me back and says “I’m down here now, but I had NO idea turkey hunting was so popular” (I’m saying to myself when I heard this “Oh sheet”) Anyway, he goes on to say that all the farms he was talking about are being hunted already ….he didn’t even mention to them about us coming down there till early this week!!!!!

I’m bummmmmmmmmmmed, to say the least….more so that I can’t get my dad out to give it a try….Everything is packed and ready to go..boo hoo..

ok, ok….enough blubbering….just wanted to share my pain!!!

Call around and ask. Maybe someone will let you hunt during your season. I have let total strangers hunt my land when they call if they sound like they know what they are going. Turkey is a little different than trying to get permission to hunt deer. The season is very short. Worth a try, you already have the tag.

Yeah, was thinking about doing that….may just drive down in the area and ask around. Kinda deflates the ‘ol balloon though ..if ya know what I mean…..

That zone is between Cannon Falls on the NE corner to Medford on the SW corner. NW corner is INterstate 35 and Hwy 19 and SE corner is Hwy 57 and 24. The area I WAS going was in the Song Valley area?? I think that’s what he called it…

I have had good luck at getting permission in person in Dodge County. Sounds like the SE corner of your zone is in this area. Just show up to places and ask, people are fairly receptive to turkey hunters unlike deer season.
I wish your zone was a bit farther south and east and I could have hooked you up with some land to hunt. Anyway best of luck I am sure you will find a place to go!

When you say “Already being hunted” do you mean they will be hunting the week you are there or do you mean that the land has been hunted already this year, meaning earlier? If they have been hunted earlier this year you will be fine.

Nah, it’s being hunted at the same time…..if it was hunted earlier I wouldn’t have worried about it.
