I’m thinking about buying the Mossberg 835 w/ thumbhole in Mossy Oak Break-up 20″ barrel. I’ve shot a Mossberg 835 NWTF gun in the past but, it was a friends and I think he’s getting sick of me asking to use it for a few days every spring. Has anyone shot this gun and if so what did you think? The farthest I shot a “Tom” w/ my friends gun was 42 yards. Just want to know if the one I’m looking @ will give me the same results. Thanks in advance

Great gun!!! I use mine for Turkey, Geese, and Coyotes. The only problem I have ever had is getting 3 1/2 shells to cycle. Never a problem with the first two shots, just the third. Is a good gun for the money in my opinion. IHO you do not need a “thumbhole” on ANY shotgun.

We have been here before and I do not want to start trouble.
You asked for opinions, so here we go…
Any gun that consistantly gives you problems should not be tolerated
I’ve shot, fixed and hunted with a lot of different guns.
If you like this gun and it fits your need, then buy it.
In “my opinion” Mossbergs, generally, are junk.
For reliability and affordability, america’s #1 choice is the Remington 870 express. The super magnum does come in 3-1/2″.
The biggest regret I have, is traiding off my old 870 years ago.
Remember, this is “my opinion” that was solicited
Good luck

cheersJanuary 9, 2007 at 8:03 pm #28083i agree w/ you for the most part. I own a 870 express and never had a problem w/ it. However, I have never shot another “Turkey only” gun until the Mossberg 835. Since I don’t need another gun for Pheasants/Grouse/Ducks, etc (the 870 takes care of that). I want a gun specifically for Turkey. What is Remington’s Turkey gun and I’ll look into it. thanks

January 10, 2007 at 4:17 am #28093stay away from the mossberg. I have a friend that bought one for turkey and just hated it. he trade it in the next year for a Remmington. I have a Remmington 870 special purpose in 3″. used it for about 20 years and never wanted another shotgun. Untill christmas 2005 the wife bought me a bennile super black eagle. Its amazing how tight a pattern it holds.

January 10, 2007 at 2:15 pm #28097Remington 870 Express Super Magnum Turkey. Comes with a turkey extra full choke. I purchased this gun about 6 years ago. It chambers 2 3/4 up to 3 1/2. With a short 23 inch barrel. Love it. Best pattern in my gun is with Winnchester Extended, 3 inch 6’s. Its an all out killer.

i owned ONE mossberg gun in my life and it is sitting in the woods, leaned up against a hickory tree, to this day where it discharged w/ the safety on 16 years ago
the only 3.5 inch gun i will put in my gun case is a browning bps. a true workhorse that will not let you down in any element. –timJanuary 16, 2007 at 6:57 pm #523536

I’ve got a 835 in one of the camo patterns – won it some years ago at a local father/son outdoors event. I’ve got the 24″ barrel, and a asstmt of chokes for it, including the turkey choke.
I use this gun alot. It’s not purty, and its heavy – but it is durable. My Remington 1100 is purty, and its heavy and durable – as long as its kept clean.
I’ve taken turkey and geese w/ the 835, the 1100 is my pheasant and deer gun.
They both work. The 1100 action hangs up when it starts to get dirty – as mentioned. The 835 occasionaly gives me a problem – if I don’t cycle the action thru its entire cycle, its a long stroke for the 3.5″ mags. This happens to me most often when goose hunting, when I take multiple shots.
My son has the 870 Express Magnum (3.5″ chamber) – same thing can happen there.
Try both if you can, then make your choice.
Good luck.

February 27, 2007 at 5:47 am #29567MOSSBERG 835 I had one for a few years, its the only gun I ever sold. I didn’t feel right selling it to anyone, but the guy who bought it was only going to use it for turkey. I guess he thought one shot should be enough.
The gun shot just fine, as far as patterns go, but it would jam constantly. There were many times the empty shell would get stuck in the barrel, and I would have to take the gun apart and the shell out with a rod.
I know some people can be pretty brand loyal, even when there not completly happy with a product, but in my opinion I would look at other choices.

I wish you didn’t sell that gun Grump. I loved hunting out of the same blind with you. You not only could only fire one shot at a time, you also provided countless hours of entertainment ramming sticks, twigs, and anything else you could find to release the spent shell.
Save your money and buy a high end gun. It’ll last you forever and save you money in the long haul. If you go cheap, you will spend the rest of your days wishing you had a better gun. Get what you really want and you will be much happier.

March 5, 2007 at 6:42 am #29642First off. Thanks to everyone who had something to say. I ended up buying a 870 Express Super Magnum this wknd. Gander Mtn. had a sale on them that I couldn’t pass up. It was on clearance and they had an extra $50 off until 3/10. I bought the gun for $319.00 and am very pleased. Coppertop and myself went to Sportsmen’s Warehouse and Scheels after the purchase and both had the same gun for $449.00, I couldn’t believe it. Anyway long story short we hope to have a couple of Toms down this spring. Good Hunting, Gobbler
