Fall Turkey Time!!!

Today was opening day for the Nebraska fall shotgun turkey season, and three of us were able to fill our permits. It was a beautiful fall evening with no wind and turkeys in sight. I was joined by my cousin Pete and our good friend Mike. As soon as we walked up to the roost we could see them coming from 500 yards away. We had plenty of time to get ready and it couldn’t have worked out any better. We sat under their roosting trees at the top of the canyon and waited for them to come into view. As soon as they reached the top of the hill shots rang out. Talk about three happy guys!!
We’ve put in a lot of miles the last several years chasing these turkeys and learning their patterns and tonight it paid off quick. We only walked 1 mile total tonight and had our birds less than 40 minutes later.
I’ll try to get some pics up as soon as I get them off the camera tomorrow.

    way to go, ben!
i got a pretty good idea where a couple flocks of toms are gonna be when illinois’ fall shotgun season opens this coming Saturday. i gotta be quick though cause the better half planned her new glarus/mt. horeb brewery tour for the same weekend!
oh, well. will still have 6 days to hunt when we get back if i dont score opening day.
btw, by any chance are you related to longtime illinois dnr turkey biologist jerry garver? i interviewed him several times back in the early 90s when the state first opened turkey hunting in my neck of the woods.

    Nice birds
I didn’t even notice the “odd colored” one until it was mentioned
