Finally after a whole morning of hunting Nick’s Wrong Way Guide service finally connected on a bird this afternoon. Josh and I called this bird in at around 2:30 this afternoon from about 150 yards gobbling the whole way in the rain. Josh put a hurtin on him from about 15 yards. Congratualtions Josh! Specs on the turkey were 24lbs. 11 inch beard and 3/4 inch spurs. We are going out tomorrow to hopefully get me a bird.

Looking for a little tip here. The turkey we called in yesterday was extremely vocal in the middle of the day, but today the turkeys once they got out of the tree for the morning they quit gobbling and wouldn’t come in. I was wondering if this happens a lot and what I can do about it. It is so frustrating when the turkeys quit gobbling after they get down from the tree.

    Welcome to turkey hunting!

The toms are difficult to figure out some days. First thing in the morning the toms start gobbling before coming out of the tree. They will usually gabble to till the find some hens. Sometime the hens will meet them right out of the tree. They don’t need to gobble anymore.. they will though. After the day progresses the hens leave the toms. The toms will start gobbling again till a hen shows. I personally like hunting the later seasons just because the hens will leave the toms to sit on their eggs about midmorning. Then the boys are on a search. Experts say if you can get a tom going late in the season around midday and later… you are in business. You need to be very cautious though because they have seen all the tricks by then. You get one coming into your calling… get him coming then go silent. That will drive them nuts and get them more willing to come.

Do you use decoys?? I haven’t had much luck with them myself????

I’m trying the hard way this year. Blind and a bow. Haven’t even sighted in the gun to keep from temptation!

The turkey we got up above we used decoys. We had 2 hens and a jake out. That is the first time I ever got them to come into decoys. I don’t have to worry about these toms seeing any tricks other than mine because no one else is allowed to hunt where i do. I’m not real new to turkey hunting but i havent had that great of a success rate. Most of the birds I’ve taken over the last few years came by pure luck. We also found that the tom yesterday responded the best when we both called at the same time. As easy as he came in it makes me wonder if just most of the time i’m not finding toms that are alone. Maybe the reason I’m striking out is because they are henned up??? Any other tips you guys have are appreciated.

Nick- that is a beautiful pic. nice bird and great job on the succesful season. i finally shot my bird on sunday after 3 long days of hunting. 22 lbs, 10 inch beard, and 1 inch spurs. i missed 2 before that but they were smaller any way. by the way have you ever had a problem with hitting birds? its messed up, i use a 3 1/2 inch mossberg and i missed a gob on opening day and a jake on saturday. but after 4 years i finally scored on a nice gobbler. i absolutely love turk hunting and i am looking foreward to next year already.

Might want to take that gun out to the range and see what kind of pattern you are getting. 2 misses in one year is 2 to many in my opion, unless you are shooting them at long ranges. It pays to go out and find the right load for your gun, because every gun is different. Every year a few buddies and I each go out and buy a different box of shells and we all shoot a couple of each. That way you don’t have to break the bank buying shells you may never use again but they may work for your buddy.

I’ve never had a problem hitting birds. In py few years I’ve been hunting turkeys I’ve been five for five on shots. But don’t worry about missing too much I’ve known some really good hunters that still miss turkeys. I think they get a little excited and get to shaking so much that they miss. Not real sure how to help you except tell u to hit the range before next season. Test out your pattern, that may be your problem. I’m going out again this fourth season to hopefully get a nice gobbler. Saw a lot during 2nd season, but was having trouble finding birds that wanted to cooperate. Good Luck.

You said it was raining when you got your bird. I have noticed that right now there is not a lot of cover in the woods, so when it is sunny out, it is usually really hot. These turkeys are black and looking for cooler locations. Hit your low areas, woods, etc. When it is cooler out the birds are out and about not staying in one location. Just my $.02. Good luck. Killed mine in 8 mins! Triple bearder.

    Jeweler,
You can’t just run into the meat locker and get it, you have to be in the woods. Congrats
