Got mine in as well. This will be my fisrt time Zone 37.I have been following a large flock around the deer stands now for two seasons.I got a call and have been trying it out.Really helps to hear the turkeys all throughout the deer seasons to get a feel for how to sound with the call.Cant wait till spring to bag me a tom.

Which time frame is your favorite to hunt?

We always thought first, but after last year, I kinda like early May. Alot of birds around gobbling!

I have always liked the later seasons, because about midmorning the hens leave the tom to sit on their eggs. That’s when the gobblers start searching and they get vocal trying to lure hens not on their nest.

I have been lucky to get the 2nd season about everytime I apply. I like the cooler temps and the skitters arn’t out yet. I seem to get an extra tag for the last season also but it isn’t as enjoyable with the bugs. I guess a goood dose of off would work since the turkeys don’t sniff ya out like a whitetail.

I applied for a WI permit for the first time this year, one 5 day season in MN just isn’t enough now that I’ve been hooked. Does anyone know how the WI lottery stacks up to MN, I’ve heard it’s easier/more likely to get a spot in Sconny…I hope that’s true!

Not sure on the odds, but I have drawn both spring and fall tags every year I have applied. Not sure on how the NR draw is though.

As long as you don’t care if you have to hunt late in the season, WI is great for NR applicants. I’ve been drawn 6 years in a row in zone 8, but it’s always the last season and on occasion the second to last season(last year first time got drawn and wasn’t last season).

How is the late season in WI? Birds coming in to the calls at all? Do you call more or less? Decoys?

Just like any other season, you have to find the right tom in the right state of mind. I very rarely hunt with decoys, in my experiences they do more harm then good. It may just be my placement of the decoys in a spot thats too visible, but I get more hang ups with decoys vs. not using them. I tend to give every setup more time then I normally would in the late seasons. Birds are more diffucult to call in but not impossible, if you do you home work and hunt hard there’s no reason you won’t get an opportunity to take a bird.

Sorry, one more thing. When I call to a turkey I react with my calling to the way the tom reacts to me. Every bird is different and likes to hear different things. But on average I call less during the late seasons. Its hard to resist the temptation to hit him with everything in your arsenal after every gobble you hear, but I think toms are just like us, the last thing they want to hear is a mouthy female.
