Posts: 191April 15, 2017 at 1:13 pm #1688600Last night, the guy hunting the filed behind me killed one around 7:30pm. His kid carried it back to the truck. It’s almost 1/2 mile to his truck, so it could’ve been a Jake for how young the boy was and that distance.
This morning in the rain, I went back to the same blind as last night because they roosted there. Had 3 toms come to within 40 yards of the blind, but they were to the right and a little behind me. They would gobble a ton but never came closer. They ended up following a hen to the opposite corner of the field about 125 yards away. I tried reaping them with the turkey fan when they went into the woods, but never saw them again.
Going back to the same blind tonight in hopes they roost there again. I’ve been using the avian x 1/2 strut Jake and a standing hen.
So far, I’ve passed on 11 jakes and cut feathers on a solo Tom. I’ve placed the hen on the ground in a breeding position with better luck.April 17, 2017 at 7:41 am #1688867Congrats to the guys knocking down
I didn’t have much luck, saw birds and had a bunch on trail cam, but they were absolutely silent and not playing the game. I’ll be back at it this weekend.
April 17, 2017 at 10:13 am #1688910Had some hens come in strutting around the two hens I had out. Was cool to watch the hens circle and strut around them. Most the gobblers I’m seeing are henned up big time. Very quite first week of the season.
I was able to take bird Saturday morning right out of roost. He was the only bird that could find in the first couple days on our property. I’m sure there are a couple more but he gobbled twice on roost that was it.
Fly down cackle and a little sweet sounds from the box call the hens he was with came running in. First critter I’ve harvested with this 20guage in 20 plus years. Sure feels good to carry around going this week to put a sling on the gun for WI seasons now. NE and MN are all done just two hunts left.

April 21, 2017 at 12:57 pm #1689798Any more luck this week? I am heading back to the farm tonight and give it another go with the bow. Hoping with the warmer weather they are a little more interested in playing the game.
April 21, 2017 at 2:39 pm #1689807Good like Sticker give one a dirt nap. Let the harpoons fly this weekend.
April 24, 2017 at 7:49 am #1690095No luck again this weekend, although I did have a Tom sneak right up behind my blind Saturday morning and gobble about 10 yards away. Scared the crap out of me. Unfortunately I don’t think he liked my strutter jake decoy and he went back the way he came
Still have plenty of activity on trail cams though. Here is a cool series I got on one cam, choosing, courting, strutting and breeding.
