Tuned up rod storage.

This may be an odd question, but I had a 13 fishing tickle stick and when I stored it with the tip bent, the rod had a permanent bend on the tip. I bought a precision noodle last winter and did not store it with a bend. My question is if I had, would the tip be messed up?

Yes. Those thin fiberglass rods will retain a shape if left with a “load” on it. You can usually straighten them back out by hanging them from the tip.

I broke the tips off a couple of my nice St. Croix rods but putting them in my Stryker rod bag with a load on the tip. I don’t do that any more! evil

I usually loosen the drag completely on my reels and make sure I don’t have any load on my rods every time I put them back in the case. I use the Eagle Claw hard case and it does really well. I use mostly 36in rods that vary from super UL for picky panfish all the way up to heavy laker rods.

they should be stored with no load, cut the line – make sure the tip isn’t being bent by leaning/laying on anything.

You can straighten them back out a bit with a couple of heat cycles

This is a common warning I give people when I make them a rod. One would have thought there might be some kind of warning on the tag with some of these rods.

I’d like to see one of St Croix’s CI32MM dead eye models that’s been sitting strung up all winter. Those were looking pretty saggy just sitting in the display racks by the time the retail season wrapped up.

I to have the Striker Ice Rod bag, love the product but nonetheless you have to mindful of this situation when putting rods away. I would prefer not to drag a hard case around on the ice but appears to be the best protection available. Looking to purchase the Scheels Ultimate Ice Rod Case or something similar this year.

Yes they will all take a set. Even open water rods with a load.

We recommend them to be stored over winter without a load on the rod.

I always take the load off mine and often even take the reels off during the off season. I have always wondered though about them taking a “set” hanging from these ceiling racks I use. I haven’t noticed any “bow” in them but definitely something I’m mindful of.

The Styrker bag is awesome carries 5 rods and all my tackle boxes plus extra reels, line, pliers, plastic bait, bait puck and more in the side pockets.
I also discovered the plastic tubes that the rods slide into have about a 2″ piece of felt at the top where the rod slides in. I removed these and the rods seem to slide in better. I also use one hand to guide the tip in and the other hand to gently slide the rod in and haven’t had a problem since. It’s a great bag I wouldn’t give up on it.

ALWAYS D-load your rods! I either hang mine vertical for storage or take the reels off and only have the rods laying in my otter sportsman’s case during the off season! I have seen enough peoples PRIZED rods get wrecked from lack of care….

You and me both! Except mine happened without even a lure on it. Got caught in the fabric that is inside the rod tubes. When I bought that bag I thought it was going to be wonderful, couldnt have been further from the truth.

I now have a Scheels hard case that is made by Plano that Scheels puts the insert in with Plano tackle trays, etc. works very well.
