The rod feels much better with braid if you’re going to try for walleye. I was using 6# braid and a 4# fluorocarbon leader after trying multiple other line combos. The rod is so light and slow that putting a stretchy line on it amounts to too much give with bigger fish like walleye.
With the walleye season closure coming, I’ve been using it as strictly a bluegill/crappie spoon rod with 1/32-1/16oz spoons in 12-20 FOW. My three biggest bluegills of the season have come in the last two weeks on the combo. I put a 500 size Shimano reel on it rather than a 1000 size, and just put 3lb fluorocarbon on it. It was strong enough to handle a 4lb Osakis largemouth last week. It balances a little better with the smaller reel.
I’m much happier with this rod as a panfish/Perch rod than a walleye rod. I was going to sell it but now I bring it along on every panfish trip for spoons, since they’re such a great tool for getting bigger fish out of a pack of dinks.
