funny you bring this up!!! Jeff Sundin in his last report mentioned tullies. he mentioned i believe otter tail lake, winnie and leech as places to go!!!!!
iffin it works i’d like to catch a few for the smoker.
Pretty strong bite on pokegama right now and probably till ice out . I was out yesterday and probably released twenty-five of them while looking for a walleye.

I do but not yet. My daughter loves fishing them so I’ve been waiting for her to get a day off from work on the weekend once it starts warming up. They are very good smoked, probably my favorite after herring. I think we could work something out Glenn, let’s wait till the snow starts melting, that’s when it’s more fun in my opinion!
That be great!!👍👍 I’d appreciate it. I agree on waiting, as I’d come from the cabin. I’d go up for a few days of fishing other lakes and species!!
Red Door Resort is hosting a Tullibee Tournament this Saturday. $25 includes dinner Saturday night.
Thought we would go next week-too much snow and slush, might not go till the beginning of April! I like ice but am tired of snow.
Anyone have a lake in the Grand Rapids area that has Tullies and a spot that is walking distance? This time of year it seems like their is either too much snow or not enough ice-spot I want to go to on Sandy is about a mile out.
Thanks

Hike with a back pack, auger strapped to that and rods in it. A mile is a easy walk. No need for a shack.

A backpack with that much weight would be miserable compared to pulling a small sled. A lightweight sled that’s narrow and long will pull like nothing. The problem with flipover sleds is the shape is terribly inefficient for pulling and they weigh a million pounds.

I throw the auger over my shoulder and rod box in hand and I’ll hike miles.
I also didn’t know tim was talking about some 74 year old friend. I guess the weak stay behind. How far will he hike if he won’t go a mile but he wants to hike ? Sounds like you may be setting him up for failure. Maybe pull his old ass in the sled and have a sled hooked behind him as well 🤔. ( only joking )
My 73 year old friend is not hiking a mile, but thanks.
Most spots are a good hike. I guess buy a snowmobile

Nothing wrong with that. Just saying it’d be a lot easier walk if you put that stuff in a sled.

Yes you are correct.

Put a smitty sled under the flipover and you wont even know you are pulling anything. Its the drag of all the surface area that makes them pull so dang hard. I made one cheaply with free skis from the neighbor and scrap wood. My kid pulls that sucker a mile easy and has no issues. He’s never do that without the smitty though.

Kinda buried the lead there. The real advice is to get yourself a sherpa… brilliant!
In all seriousness I’ve gone the smitty route and it’s still alot easier to just ditch the flipover and use a light sled.

Well, I havent even used it since I made it, but he goes with his friends a lot. I havent been fishing much and when I have I pull the sled with the Bearcat. Usually only use the smitty on early ice.

Great point especially with the weather warming significantly there is no need for a house.
No need for a shelter and I might just fly solo one afternoon for tullies and go for pannies the rest of the trip. Looks like in Grand Rapids their might be some lakes with shorter walks to Tullie territory-not buying a snowmobile just yet.

Pokegama lake in Grand Rapids has multiple landings you could park and walk to tullibee. There everywhere. I would look at a lake map with the landings and see which ones will get you out to any sort of basin and I’m sure you will find them.
Lake Mina in Alex has a good tullie bite going. 2nd hand info, no desire to fish them, but I think guys are driving out and most of the fish are 13-18”
Thanks Gino! I was looking at Poke’ yup I think 2 accesses near deep tullie looking water, and some opportunities for pannies too.
Gino,
What’s the current snow/slush status on Poke?
Know you’ve had a lot of snow this winter… better half is out of town next week; thinking of making a run to GR if weather cooperates. Would be pulling a Smitty sled.
Thanks
Pete
