What do you want to know? I have a 42″ and it is a stout rod for southern lake trout on LOTW. It was my first lake trout rod. I have also built two others with slightly softer actions.

I have one. I like it. I also have a TB pro glass. Like it too but I like the LTP better.

It’s best for larger fish, 5+ lbs. Probably best for fishing Great Lakes and 1+ oz weight.

What do you want to know?

Thanks guys. Wondering how the action is. Don’t want a 2×4, just wondering how stout it is. For mid sized lakers, boys and pike.

Definitely stout. Good for burying large hooks. The rod is as much of a match for the lure size as it is the fish to be fought. It’s glass so not super sensitive. The only knock I have on it is the small eyes. For fishing outside they ice up quickly compared to my TB pro glass. If I did it again I’d see if I could get bigger eyes. Mine is 46” and I wouldn’t hesitate to go that long or I’d add extra length to the handle. A linger handle would help fighting bigger fish.

Smaller 1-5# lakers I’d probably look at something a little more sensitive. Especially if you plan to fish in less than 60’.

so it’s a big fish rod. The ones we hooked up with were in the teens. Lost a much heavier fish mid fight. Thanks for the feedback.

They’re great rods. Slightly overkill for 3-6 pound fish, but it’s really hard to fight a 10# lake trout on a rod like the commander. Mainly because the butt of the rod isn’t long enough to give you any kind of leverage.

The LTP in a 38″ length is my go-to lake trout rod when fishing swimbaits, tubes, lipless crankbaits, and Jigging Raps.

I will usually have a Commander rigged with a 3/16th Tingler spoon with a feather treble as my “finesse” presentation. That rod just works better for fishing something light like a flutter spoon.

My mentality is along the lines of this – Yes it might be more fun to fight a shaker lake trout on a lighter action rod, but I really hate to be outgunned when a 15+ pounder eats and i’m using a walleye rod. The fight lasts 20 minutes because you don’t have any leverage. With the LTP on the same fish it lasts maybe 5 minutes. Trust me a 5 minute fight is still plenty long!

I have caught them up to 22 pounds with the LTP. It gets the job done just fine. Heck i’ve even caught 40-50 pound sturgeon on them.

Once you get to that size, you need want a longer rod. Big head shakes will unload a shorter rod and I assume you’ll be fishing in Canada so I’d also assume barbless. Not good if you want to keep them buttoned up.

Yes barbless in Manitoba, but not in Ontario. But that is a bit of a concern.

Does TUCR make a longer lake trout rod?

Last year I modified a glass shorty leadcore rod and it was awesome to fish with outside. 60″ gave a ton of leverage and you could give your bait a lot of action with the flick of a wrist.

What rod were you using and how did you modify it?

It was a 60″ fiberglass Peregrine trolling (casting) rod.

All I did was sand the trigger off with a belt sander and put a 4000 Sienna on it.

I know it sounds redneck as hell, but it was a killer combo. Going against the spine wasn’t a problem, and I landed some toads with it.

The guides are pretty good sized (since it was designed for leadcore) and worked well in freezing temps. It’s way too long to use in a shack, but it makes an awesome run and gun rod.

It’d be cool if TUCR made something similar, I’d buy one )

I made something similar for my son for the summer and I use it on hard water. 55” solid glass, 12” handle for extra leverage. A lot of people use Rainshadow .385X.105X72 blank for Lake Trout and Sturgeon in the 40″-55” range. The blank comes in at 72” and it virtually unbreakable. Now I have to catch a sturgeon on it to really test it.

Yes we can. Usually people don’t go that long but we have built some in 50″. The biggest concern is the ability to travel with it.

    Thanks

I have built on the Rainshadow blank and it is very nice to build on and has a great action. Primarily use it for jigging big pike on the Pond and Red. Really like that I can set the hook and hang on for the ride without worrying about breaking a blank. Rainshadow lists it as a saltwater blank just trim it from the butt to your liking.

Just need to buy a rifle case. Luckily my wife works at Pelican and they have just about anything you would want. There are some other decent rifle cases out there though.

I built a rod on the Rainshadow blank mentioned above. I read somewhere that a person thought it was the same blank the LTP is built on but I can’t say that for sure.

Last year was the 1st year I fished lakers, but I felt it worked well. Baits from a half ounce to pushing an ounce worked well, and I think it could handle heavier yet without issues. I caught a few trout from about 20 to 30 inches. The 20 to 25 inch fish are a little anti climactic on it, though the mid 20s do still give a “decent” fight if you let them. The 30 incher was no problem but did load the rod well for the whole fight.

Definately a rod capable of handling big fish when needed but the softer tip does allow some bend on smaller fish.

If the LTP is similar to the Rainshadow blank I’d say it’s a good rod for medium to bigger fish. I built mine to 45.5 inches and like that length for fishing outside or in a bigger hub. Smaller 1 man shacks will need something shorter, and i don’t think I’d build this rod shorter than 40 or so. Seems you’d lose some good backbone and less overall flex to keep fish pinned up.

    Cameron,
The Power Precision is a good rod for Lake Winnipeg and the larger lipless crankbaits.

Thanks. I’m all set there. Have three rods from roger at big sky before he retired. The 40” I have from him did fine on the lakers, just looking for a bit heavier rod. Big bots and pike on cedar, as well as lakers.

Cameron, I could build you a Rainshadow blank rod. Where are you located? The shipping might be the expensive part. I am in Central Minnesota.

I’m in the states daily for work, but live in Manitoba. I get stuff shipped to Pembina, I’m distributing the energized outdoors batteries as well as the ice hole products up here.
