TUCR Inferno?

I don’t want to bash, but personally, I’m a little bummed I pre-ordered a “custom” rod that I’m waiting 4+ weeks for when I could now walk into the Cabela’s 20 min from me and pick one off the shelf…today

I totally get what your saying. The benefit of Cabelas stocking the rods, is that for people like me who are more impatient when I shop, I can get my hands quickly on the rod I want. However, in getting the rod quick, I lose the ability to put my own personality into the rod. Cabelas only stocks the most common rod lengths in the stock colors. Also their supply will almost definitely be gone before people are driving on the ice. So putting an order directly through the shop guarantees the rod, the color and the length you want. Just with a tough wait.
On a side note, I will say production has really picked up this year. We have more quality wrappers and finishers than anytime in the past.

    Dan,
You too have a valid point, I guess some clarification on what “custom” means to me as it’s obviously different for everyone.

In my case, I don’t buy a rod so that I can get custom color wraps, or my initials on it, or that funky 33″ size that’s not offered as a std length. Most those are just “lipstick” in my eyes. I buy a rod for its action/feel. I’ve bought TUCR rods in the past because of their action/feel.

So for me, that means I ordered a 32″ Fusion…no lipstick. Well, now I can go get that same “custom” action/feel directly off the shelf (and use/earn more Cabela’s bucks mrgreen ). I also believe it will now hinder resale should I decide I want to hand it down to someone else so I can try something new or different.

Oh well, end rant. I guess we’ll see how things play out. From a business perspective, I get why TUCR did it. My MBA and experience can grasp that and in that case, I wish TUCR the best of luck.

I hear what you are saying, I just want to clarify quickly though. The TUCR that are available at Cabelas and Scheels are the exact same rods that you can order on the TUCR web page. There is no difference in build quality, or materials. The Tuned Up Inferno is the only rod that is built separate.

In a previous post of this thread it is stated by TUCR that the blanks are not even the same between the TUCR in house and the TUCR sold at scheels and cabelas. It states the blanks are “designed” by TUCR…
And all the cabelas and scheels rods are made in volume production by a sub contractor. So, what is the truth?

    Mark,

Dan and I were discussing the difference between the Inferno model (outsourced and not same premium materials…e.g. Recoil guides) and the fact that you can now also buy their previously custom order only models (Bullwhip, Precision, Commander, Fusion, etc) also at Cabelas. Those ARE the same rods as those ordered from TUCR.

My apologies to all that my earlier post seems to have “muddied” this thread.

Cabelas and Scheels carry two lines of rods with similar names, both originating from Tuned Up Custom Rods.
The fist line of rods was carried by Scheels and Cabelas last year as well. These are the Tuned Up Custom Rods( Power Noodle, Bullwhip, Fusion, Precision, Commander, etc.) These are the exact same rods as what is offered on Tunedupcustomrods.com, and the same that you would find in their shop and at the Ice Show.
The Second line of rods is brand new this year. This is the Tuned Up Inferno line (Medium, Medium Heavy, and Ultra Light). These rods are only available at retailers. They are not built in the Tuned Up Shop, and are not available at the shop. They were designed by Tuned Up Custom Rods, but were manufactured elsewhere to provide a lower price point for consumers who want a quality stick, but can’t swing the “custom” prices.
With both lines having such similar names, the way I think of them, and an easy way to differentiate the lines is to call the first line Tuned Up Custom Rods or TUCR. The second rod can then be referred to as Inferno, such as Inferno Medium, or Inferno Ultralight.
Sorry for the confusion up to this point. I hope this clears it up. But if, not keep asking so I can try to make sense of myself.

You can do custom colors, handles, and many other options for. Cabelas does have the fusion but limited sizes, handle options, and availability.

There’s also something to be said for walking into the TUCR shop to pick up your rod and getting first class service from the very guys that built it. When I drop $100 on a rod, I like to shake the hand of the people selling it to me. I have yet to walk out of their shop in less then 45 minutes when buying a rod because there’s always good poop to be shot.

And all due respect, if you ordered the same rod from TUCR that’s on the Cabelas’ shelf, you’re missing the point.

I’m just going to bow out of this thread because this is not the time nor place for me to argue my opinions. It was not my intention to derail this thread.

Please use this opportunity to return to the discussion regarding the Inferno line. wave

Pulled the trigger on a UL Inferno without seeing one in person. Shipped to store (Cabelas) delivery late next week, which means 2 or 3 weeks..lol. I figured what the heck.

Yes we sure do in the custom line. But in the Inferno no.

If you didn’t choose your color, guide type, cork type, handle type when you pre ordered than you should have just gone to Cabelas. If you did design the rod which most people do when they preorder them from TUCR, you are lucky to be only waiting 4 weeks. Don’t think you’ll be doing much ice fishing before then anyway.

I get my TUCR’s with whatever the standard colors are for whatever model I’m getting. I always order directly through TUCR. I don’t mind waiting for it in the fall (can’t use it yet anyways and it’s a nice surprise when I get the shipping notice). Actually, I’m waiting on my second 30” PN right now (placed my order on Sep. 8) that matches my other PN and my Bullwhip needed another friend ) I like to order things direct if I can. Less hands for the product to go through and it makes me feel like I’m supporting the business better.

I think the Inferno line was a great decision by TUCR. It helps put their name out for people that aren’t comfortable spending the cash on custom rods but can get premium quality for a production rod. Production rods of other brands are already reaching $50-$70 and personally, based on my experience with TUCR, I’d take an Inferno over any of them. I honestly don’t see how everyone is confused with the “custom” aspect. Maybe if “Custom” wasn’t part of TUCR’s business name their wouldn’t be as much confusion. From my point of view, The Inferno’s are basic application rods meant to cover most general needs with quality components (mass produced over sea’s) and the custom’s are for people who want a specific rod for specific applications (made to order in-house). I think in the long run, this could prove to be a very smart move for TUCR. It will also bring more attention to their custom lines. Their demographic audience is growing and this a good way to appeal to that growth. Imagine if other mass producing companies offered a “made to order” custom line that only cost ~$100. I dont think TUCR would be the company it is now if they would have tried to jump straight into the production market.

As a sportsmen and an aspiring entrepreneur, I wish TUCR the best of luck with their new endeavor!

This ^^^ says it all! I am in the same boat, I could care less about the colors of the rods, the action of their rods are amazing! I use the precision on almost everything and the Commander for my annual Lake Winnipeg trips, amazing rods! I will be getting a 32 in Inferno, for the price point you can’t beat it!

Took delivery of my UL Inferno yesterday, seems like a well built mass produced rod. Personally I wish the cork handle was a tad longer as I tend to NOT use a pistol grip, but for ordering a rod sight unseen it will be fine. Now to pair it up with a reel…Hmmmm????

I fished with the Inferno noodle rod the other day and it was pretty nice. I may get one for my dad. The price is appropriate for the quality.

Just thought I would let you all know, I purchased a TUCR Inferno in 32” MH and I feel like it’s a good quality rod for the money. I have a custom 36” longboard noodle from DH customs and although the Inferno is not on par with quality it was half the price. I plan on buying a couple more of the Infernos next season if they are still available, I don’t know if you could find a better rod for the price.

Wanted to chime in being someone not in the areas that carry TUCR rods western CO. I appreciate this form greatly. Nate at TuCR has been fast at responding to my questions and the guys at RSPGds have helped on my choices. I will say that it has been an education on terminology as the rods are not quite what I have expected but learning to use the various ones I have gotten. I would like to see the QT be just slightly slower into the backbone but I do like the power it builds to. When I spend $$$ dollars on the GLX or NRx rods I pretty much know the rods performance before I get it I always check out all of the upper end fly rods we get before spending the $$$ on them thanks again for this forum and all of the different input I have bought acouple of Elliot rods I like them still looking for that go to LT Rod.
Wanted to add the help I have gotten from SKB and others on the Skeeter forum has been invaluable
