Trying to get a portable bait and tackle business started

    Hello everyone,

About two years ago I started getting into snagging with a couple of buddies here in southeast Iowa. Paddlefish are plentiful around here and we have no size limits, but we can only keep 2 per day. For anyone that knows about snagging, you know that if it wasn’t for the snags, it would just be called fishing. Anyways, we lost A LOT of sinkers. A few months into it, I decided to try to figure out a cheaper way for us to keep doing it instead of spending $4 a pound for sinkers. That’s when one of my buddies mentioned he use to make his own. Well, needless to say, I went to the local bait shop and bought all the supplies I needed to make our own sinkers. So I made quite a few and we never bought sinkers again. Well, later that year, a few people asked to buy some sinkers, and me being the business minded person I am, I figured why not and sold them at $2.50 a pound. I got a few regular buyers and moved on from there.

Two years later I have a few regular customers including a couple small bait shops around. I’m now able to sell at $2 a pound and have gotten into live bait (bluegill) and snagging hooks. Fishing is something I love to do and be around and I figure why not make some money doing what I love to do? Now I basically started a business with it, but it’s still in it’s infancy. I plan on having a portable shop (very little overhead compared to a brick and mortar store) and the added benefit of delivering 24/7.

So now I’m looking to increase our visibility by reaching out to people through these forums and trying out online sales. Luckily one of my partners is great with building websites and such, so I’ll have a website soon. But for now, forums are probably the place to do this. Ebay and Amazon have insane fees and really don’t make it as cheap as I want to be with people. We are fishermen and our goal is to make it so people can enjoy this great hobby/lifestyle and it be as affordable as possible.

Hopefully all of this isn’t too long and some people read it but here’s the jest of it. We are looking to start selling online, so we are selling sinkers at $2 a pound. We have 2-5 ounce bank sinkers and 1-5 ounce egg sinkers available. I’m looking into getting more molds fairly soon. Shipping should be fairly cheap since there’s the flat rate boxes which are basically $6 and can hold quite a few sinkers.

So if you’re interested in buying some sinkers, feel free to contact me here or on our facebook page, just search for LeadHeadFishingSupply. Our email is [email protected].

Hopefully I didn’t break any rules with this post. Thanks for reading and if anyone has any advice, feel free to share it.
