Trying out the TUCR Ice Sturgeon Version

I didn’t get out last winter to give the Tune Up Custom Rod a shot at sturgeon through the ice, so I thought I would take it along when the FW and I went out this last Saturday. At the very least I wanted to see how the rod would handle a channel cat.

Prior to using the rod we had two hot grease release channels and a sheep to the boat.

I used a heavier sinker then I would have for ice fishing. It wasn’t long and the FW said she felt a gibble. Next thing I know she has the hook set and is struggling to bring it in. She’s left handed and the reel was backwards for her, which by the was added to my giggling. rotflol

I put down the camera as it gets closer to the boat. When it’s head and long neck breaks surface, a scream comes out of the FW that I’ve only heard once before when a snake stopped in the water right next to her. shock

It was so loud, the three anglers in the boat anchored a few blocks up stream of us all turned around to look. With Deb at the 18′ mark of my 17′ boat she said quite profoundly, “THAT IS NOT COMING IN THIS BOAT!”.

I believe it was a Spiny Softshell turtle that was released unharmed and that put an end to our fishing that day.

I’m thinking the rod passed with flying colors. waytogo

You really think it is up to par after a turtle Brian? They’re usually dead weight once lifted from the bottom and usually cats pull harder (unless we’re talking about those stink bait cats you catch for the griddle)

    How long?
    Multiple actions available?
    Price?
    Bait cast / spinning?
Extra fast action mag heavy turtle?

    You been getting any Dino’s?

No dino action to speak of. But the channels are kicking butt.
A 15 Friday and a friend hung a 12 on the scale yesterday late afternoon.

I don’t have all the rod info you’ve requested at my finger tips. Sorry. I have some sort of Shimano spinning reel on it.

I was lucky enough to tangle with a upper 50 sturg on that rod this last winter… What a difference from what I was used to. You will love it for the ice season Brian!!!

These rods kick butt! Jakob Hals and I had one night last winter where we caught no less than 25 sturgeon through the ice. What a blast! As far as the photo, Jake made me do it. LOL

Well I might actually have been impressed had you held the sturgeon in your mouth and the rod in your hands. jester

It’s no 50 incher, but 25 of them this size are fun!

I think we should just stop at kissing them. Eh?
