I didn’t get out last winter to give the Tune Up Custom Rod a shot at sturgeon through the ice, so I thought I would take it along when the FW and I went out this last Saturday. At the very least I wanted to see how the rod would handle a channel cat.
Prior to using the rod we had two hot grease release channels and a sheep to the boat.
I used a heavier sinker then I would have for ice fishing. It wasn’t long and the FW said she felt a gibble. Next thing I know she has the hook set and is struggling to bring it in. She’s left handed and the reel was backwards for her, which by the was added to my giggling.
I put down the camera as it gets closer to the boat. When it’s head and long neck breaks surface, a scream comes out of the FW that I’ve only heard once before when a snake stopped in the water right next to her.
It was so loud, the three anglers in the boat anchored a few blocks up stream of us all turned around to look. With Deb at the 18′ mark of my 17′ boat she said quite profoundly, “THAT IS NOT COMING IN THIS BOAT!”.
I believe it was a Spiny Softshell turtle that was released unharmed and that put an end to our fishing that day.
I’m thinking the rod passed with flying colors.
