Walleye and sauger are present in near record numbers according to recent fisheries assessments, with several strong year classes of walleye present.”

It seems odd that the fisheries assessments are pointing to record numbers, but (some) anglers are still calling for pushing back the “closed” dam area in the spring.

    Just thinking out loud here.
Please don’t go and bash the DNR by saying they don’t know what they’re talking about. The creel survey touches a ton of anglers and the yearly netting is a better indicator the me getting skunked a few times (alright, all the time).

Maybe its just ethical anglers tired of seeing the wholesale slaughter of juvenile fish in those scours near the dam and the pressure put on spawning fish close to the dam? I’d be fine with a closure from Jan 1 until the inland opener of either MN or WI from highway 63 to the dam. Plenty of fish below the highway that can be left as is to fish.

Nice piece, cool that Nick would teach his kid to go fishing with an open mind, to not catch a walleye (that is in probably 9000 of our lakes) would be a reason for some to complain, instead his kid gets an eel, and dad celebrates how cool and unique that is.

Dont fish near the dam and spawning fish its unethical, however it becomes ethical to fish downstream of highway 63 for a different group of spawning fish, lol
