Whats your opinion on the recent trend of putting big flags in the bed of pickups? Cool or dumb? Personally I’m leaning dumb but a little undecided

Guess I’m late to the party. Thought it was a newer thing

Old or new, dumb. A desperate cry for attention and disrespectful of the flag they’re ripping to shreds.

Displaying the flag is always a beautiful thing but not ripping it to shreds. God Bless America!!!

I haven’t seen any of them ripped to shreds, if they are they should replace them. It’s not my thing but it has been around a long time and if someone wants to do it go for it.

What I hate is how the collective view towards those who fly flags is making assumptions about that person. I hope we can go back to the day when you can fly a flag for pride over your country and not symbolizing anything else.

Funny this came up, I just left the north branch kwik trip. Young kid had a flag flying off his truck, tattered and torn. I told him how disrpectful that was. He had no idea. He thought he was being a 17 year old red neck. I love seeing the flag, but not beat up. I told him to bring it to the legion, they will properly burn it. He sat there pale faced even tho I was educating him respectfully. He said he would bring it there. ( doubt it happened ).

Either way I love the flag. Proudly and respectfully raise it any where.

I have noticed a fair amount of them that are ripped. It’s obviously easier to see they’re ripped once they stop.

It’s pretty to see if they are ripped when they are moving

Personally I’m just glad someone is speaking up on behalf of Smurfs. And don’t forget that tribe from the Avatar movie. Na’vi lives matter too.

I helped form an organization. We did flag displays, and helped people understand proper flag etiquette. Being carful not discourage anyone trying. The best flag from a usual retail store will take about 30 mph wind. So in a parade or slower traffic, you may be ok. Even in high wind states Like the Dakotas. Stationary flags only last about a year if your lucky. The flag I put up on Flag Day last year. Cost over $60 from an official flag store. My new one was just delivered this week. Mostly due to red fade.
I find it interesting. The US flag code states that a American Flag is not to be used on anything disposable. That will be used and and thrown away. Check out a forever stamp from the US Postal. Do as we say, not as we do I guess.

I do not like this trend of display of the flag from truck beds, etc, where is getting dirty and damaged. It is not political. It is a matter of respect.

According to the American Legion guidelines for respectful display of the American Flag, our flag is not to be displayed where or when it is likely to be damaged.

The flag is also never to be allowed to touch the ground or any object other than the flagpole on which it is displayed. When it is displayed on a flagpole that pole must be high enough that when the flag is at rest the flag does not touch the ground or the object on which the pole is mounted.

Yes gimruis that what I meant. Obviously. Sorry for the lol. ( when I say sorry I mean I’m sorry you said it )
For dirty water. You are one of those guys who just needs a old school ass whooping. Just so you can call for help. And I hope no one shows. I’m in north branch, come by if you live near. Let’s have a beer and talk.

I did a lot of things to fly this flag in my yard. Not on my truck. But ill personally deal with any one who has a issue. I live for that, and if you have a problem with our flag I’d love for you to come talk to me in person besides online.

Here I go again possibly turning something into a political post when a question was asked in innocence and so is my reply, those who dont like what I say go pee up a rope.

Our flag demands the utmost respect, it means a tremendous amount to me and I had to think about how I was going to reply to this.
My father served in the US Navy during the Korean war, his ship went through a typhoon where winds were in excess of a 120 MPH, not only that his ship was hit four times with enemy artillery fire and he was blown up, burnt up, and landed in a sea of saltwater and fuel oil.

once back aboard, he and several others saved the ship by tossing the bags of black powder for the big guns overboard that if ignited would of blown them all to kingdom come but they believed in the flag and everything it stood for, they almost died breaking the back of communism and for the freedoms all of you here enjoy today.

All of this time, in typhoon winds, all of the shelling and destruction of young lives on his ship, that old banner still waved through it all.
I am certain that my father would of much rather saluted that flag whether it be in the back of a redneck wanna be pickup truck at 80 per or hanging from the local barbers doorpost than almost giving it all.

however you choose to display the flag, and I dont care if you think it makes you look tough, cool, whatever, as long as it flies and you remember what my father and thousands like him went through and those who did give it all, I am good with it.
for those who choose to wear it as a piece of clothing, or any other form that dishonors it, I will personally kick your ass.

MODS: if what I say causes this post to be taken down or I am given a time out, please remove me and any/all posts/replies I have made from this forum as I will not stand for disrespect for old glory and anyone who fought for her.

Those flags go through as much or more abuse in a windstorm than on the back of a pickup. Some places they get tattered and ripped in a few weeks on a flagpole. Is that disrespect?

I personally love to see the flag flying everywhere. When it starts showing wear replace it, but don’t think it’s anymore disrespectful just because it’s on a pickup. The only difference between a pickup and a flagpole is it’s harder to see the damage it has 30+ feet up on the flagpole.

I do agree that they have seemingly become more popular in the last few years. But they aren’t anything new. As for other flags besides the American flag, I see those too. The OP didn’t specifically say American flag when he posted so I assume he meant all types of flags.

Other than to elicite a reaction you are old enough to know better.

I would buy 2-3 flags every year at the Sportsman show in Mpls. I will admit I didn’t follow the “flag” rule. I didn’t lower it at night. I didn’t fly it 1/2 mast unless ordered by the President. It went up and proudly flew over my property in Princeton and also on the Trail. It got changed out when needed. The flag on the Trail received it’s proper handling as there are 2 Navy guys who handle it.

this thread really got me to thinking, and i really havent come to a conclusion about how i feel about these flags on trucks. i respect that flag with all my heart but never rally gave this much thought until now.

what really is gut wrenching to me is to see at a funeral how they fold that flag and hand it to the family.

‘On behalf of the President of the United States, (the United States Army; the United States Marine Corps; the United States Navy; or the United States Air Force), and a grateful Nation, please accept this flag as a symbol of our appreciation for your loved one’s honorable and faithful service.’

Whenever I am at a military funeral, these words make me cry. They were tearing up a little as I copied them into this response. I have my dad’s flag on display in my living room.
