I’m hearing a lot of stories of people packing Hornet/Wasp spray cans as well. Probably not legal, but would guess a good stream of that stuff would send most critters on their way – would probably also work on the jerk that just waded into the river right next to you..
Dogs and bears are one thing,,.,,,cougars are another. If it was serious, you’d probably never know it was there until it jumped you.
The only bear I have encountered in the wild were the ones running from the chained up boats while in canada. I am no expert but a guide told me some people buy whistles, compressed air fog horns, pepper spray etc. Sometimes they work and sometimes they do not. He said the only sure way to deter a mad charging bear was with a big gun. Right after that he asked me if I knew how to tell the size of a bear by its poop? I said “no”. He then explained big bear poop smells like pepper spray, will have a whistle or two and pieces of chewed up fog horn cans in it.
have run in to a sow with cubs withing 10 miles of the town I live in three times and have also had close calls with three other bears. They ran away but it still sent a chill down the spine.

There has been a note circulating on the internet that claims wasp spray as a “replacement” for pepper spray. However, Snopes.com lists that note as a hoax. You might want to know that if you attempt to spray your bear with wasp spray. Might be more effective to throw the can at it!
