Late August I fished in southwestern Wisconsin where I landed a 20″ brown and also had a 32″ brown break off my 10 lb line. After the trout of a lifetime got away I decided to stick around. I did not expect her to hit again. However I also did not expect to catch a pair of fat 14″ brook trout.
Some folks say brook trout are special and you should let all of them go. I disagree. The brook trout stream I fish are THICK with fish and are even out competing brown trout. I was even amazed to see brook trout dominate the north shore streams near Grand Marais over the 4th of July holiday in 70 degree water. The brookies are resilient, in high numbers, and nobody seems to be fishing them anymore. Len took me to one local stream in which the minute your fly/lure/worm hit the water, it was attacked by an 8-12″ brook trout.
