Trolling prop on a 8hp Yamaha

finally bought a small ob for my Jon boat, an 8hp Yami, i was so concerned about the mechanics like the compression (thanks Grouse) that I barely looked at the prop. The prop is a wide bladed trolling prop-I probably will not do much trolling with this rig, mostly I’ll be on small lakes and mid sized rivers. Pretty sure this prop will cut into top speed but I am ok with that (I think) if it gives me more power with passengers that would be great. So should I replace the prop?

Yes, your going to need a new prop. That one will over-rev the engine. Find out what prop size came on a normal 8hp and order it up.

Called the place that I bought it from-factory is probably 8.5, I have a 9-they said that I should see how it runs (have not yet) see if it is ‘cavitating”. Otherwise he can order one for 150$$$$$$$$$!!!! Ideas?

Run it and see how it preforms, Can’t comment on something you have not ran yet. Think a 1/2 pitch would make a big difference?

Tim, dont be afraid to try a solas amita series prop, I priced a 8.5 x 9 just for kicks it retails for about 66 bucks and change

I ran the yamaha T-8 as the main motor on a jon boat no problems. You will be fine. That motor will never get the boat up on plane – no matter what prop you put on.

How is that? Both motors put 8hp to the prop.

True, both are 8 hp heads, but they’re geared differently. Kind of like a V8 pickup, same motors but some are geared to haul ass and some are geared for pulling stumps. Props are like tires…use the best one for the gear ratio you have for optimum performance.

^^^^^ If it is a T8 could very easily over rev the engine using a stock 8 HP prop or lug the heck out of a standard 8 HP with the 4 blade elephant ear prop. Find the serial number that will tell you which engine it is.
