Trolling motor selection

I know that this topic has been posted 100’s of times in various ways, but I just wanted your opinions on my (future) set-up so please be gentle with me. I currently have a “verbal” accepted offer on a new Lund 1875 Crossover XS with a 150HP Merc on back. This will be used for pulling kids and family stuff as well as me fishing in it as much as I can. I don’t really fish rivers although I might sporadically. I like to pull cranks and want to get into more of that this year. I do not like the look of a kicker motor and don’t really want to mess around with that type of set-up. The sales guy told me that the boat is currently wired for 24v, but I was thinking of putting in an Ulterra 112 36v from the start. He said that that’d be way too much weight up front and “overkill”. I don’t go on long trips and I put my batteries right on the charger as soon as I get home.

My questions for you all are this:
-Is that too much weight up front?
-If I go with an Ulterra 80lb, how fast could I get up to troll 3-5 mph comfortably?
-Would the Ulterra 112 be overkill and would I even see the relative increase in benefits of going that route vs the 80 lb and having to re-wire and mess with the extra weight in front?

I fish out of a buddies 1875 Crossover with a 175 often, and I would go with the 80lb 24v. That’s what he has and it is plenty powerful for fishing rivers or extensive trolling all day (want to say it can troll up to mid 2 mph on a calm lake). It might not get you in the 3-5 mph range, but your 150 should be able to handle that range just fine especially if you have TrollMaster or whatever the RPM adjuster is called for the big motor.

I had a 1700 prov with a 80 pound terrova on it there is no way it would pull my boat at 5 mph it would do 3.6 but at that you really work the batteries and do not get much run time. If you truly are trolling 3 to 5 mph I would just use the big motor spring for the option where you can dial in your rpm or what I did slot was run the big motor as low as it would go and just use the bow mount for control

I have a 24v 80lb on my 1700. Battery life should not be a problem for what you want, but as said above, you will struggle to go that fast unless it’s glass. At those speeds you can use the big motor though. Most all of my trolling with cranks I do with my outboard.

Thanks for all of your input guys, I really appreciate it! Did a little more research and talked to a couple of buddies who are all suddenly Lund experts and know best lol. Looks like I’ll prolly opt for the 80# and use the big motor (rpm down) if need be.
