Right now i have a 55lb thrust 12v trolling motor on my 18′ Crestliner and i have to max out my trolling motor to just go the speed i want. Im really looking into getting a 24v system and was wondering if there would be a huge differance between the 70lb and 80lb thrust. The price for an 80 is quite a bit more than the 70 thats why im asking.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

I have a 1850 Super Hawk with the 80# Ipilot Link. It does the job just fine, not sure I would be happy with the 70# in the wind. Keep in mind the Super Hawk has higher sides then a Fish Hawk. For instance if I have the canopy up and it is windy the 80# struggles to hold a line at trolling speeds.
I would never own a trolling motor without Ipilot Link, the features are awesome.

If you fish current frequently, I believe you will want the extra power paired with a set of good batteries.

17′ Lund fisherman… and I wouldn’t go any smaller than the 80# I have on it. I upgraded to the Terrova last year with I Pilot, and simply love it. Best item I have on the boat…. just makes fishing so much nicer. Get the long shaft as well.

    1650 Crestliner FishHawk

I went with the 24v #80 terrova 60″ shaft with I-Pilot. It can troll over 3 mph and battery life is insane. This is on a smaller boat. I would recommend this trolling motor for your 18ft boat over the #70 everytime. Make the purchase once and be happy, I think you will need the 80 in certain wind/current conditions and if nothing else you will get more battery life. The long shaft is needed in any waves IMO, and you can cut it fairly easy if you prefer shorter after trying it.

If I could do it again I would get the Ipilot Link and Humminbird electronics for sure.

To start off I have an 80 lb terrova with hbirds and iLink on a 1775 pro v and the only thing I would consider changing would be to going to a 36 volt on my next boat.
Just throwing out an idea here to possibly save you some money, and possibly only in the short term. But what if you bought a second 12 volt battery for your current 12 volt motor and rigged it up in parallel. This would not give you any more power just longer run time, but you get to try out the extra weight of the second battery, etc. I am also guessing you will need a new on board battery charger or to add a single bank charger for the extra battery. Keep in mind it is best to have 2 very similar if not identical batteries for 24 volt or 12 volt parallel set ups, but if you have 1 newer 12 volt now you could sure get a second identical battery that would be new now. And if you are on a budget, you get a smaller spend now to try that upgrade to run time at a lower cost but still have two batteries if you choose to switch over to a 24 volt system in the future. Just need to rewire from parallel to series.
I would have to say I would go 80 lb over 70 lb and get 2 new 27 or 31 group batteries if it was me, and not be satisfied by a half way fix, but just an idea that might fit budget or use needs if you don’t get out a lot. Maybe even buy you time to find a used 80lb if budget is a big concern.
