Hello- I’m looking for a bow mount for a 16ft Lund Angler II with a 40 HP motor. Lund lists the boat at 712lbs. Looking at Minn kota Powerdrives and Terrovas, but not sure what pound thrust I need. Leaning towards a 12v 55lb with a 54″ shaft, but open to 24v if needed. I mostly fish for walleye in smaller lakes in northern MN. I keep this boat on a lift all summer so would be convenient to only have one battery.

I’m new to this forum, and there seems to be a lot of great info. Would appreciate any recommendations. Thanks.

Welcome to the forum Matt. This is always a tough choice when there is “good enough” vs. “more is always better”. It sounds like the 55 would probably work for you 90 – 95% of the time based on conditions and the amount of time per day that you are on the water.

I agree that a 12v 55 would likely make you happy. A bump to a 24v would be better, but you have to weigh in the costs associated–additional battery ($ and weight), additional bank for an onboard charger, etc. I had a 12v 55 on a similarly sized Sylvan, and it worked well for me.

If you are willing to pay a little more for the Terrova, I’d go with that. The power drive is their base model and the pedal is junk.

If you don’t have power at the shore it will be a hassle to charge. I would go 24 volt just for the added length between charges. If you have power then the single battery should be enough.

Thanks guys. Will probably get a Terrova. I don’t like the stow and deploy lever on the Powerdrive.

This is good advice, and is the main reason why I only went with a 12v 55lb Terrova a few years ago for my boat. I liked that 12v is more simple wiring and charging, less weight and storage, and cheaper. My boat’s specs are 848lbs, plus a 60hp outboard and all of the other stuff, so a little heavier than your boat by a couple hundred lbs. I primarily bass fish and on smaller lakes so I very rarely have the speed above 5 (1mph). I think my top end speed is around 2.4mph on calm water.

I would say that the 12v 55lb Terrova on my boat has been more than suitable 90% of the time. The 10% is when I have trolled crankbaits with just the Terrova and it’s tough to get the desired speed if there is much wind, and if I’m working into a stiff wind. Frankly, if the wind is too much for the trolling motor, it’s unpleasant in general.

And I completely agree that the Terrova is much better than the Powerdrive.
