Wondering how everyone runs 4 trolling rods with little tangles I only run 2 and 3 at most but want to run 4 efficiently. My idea is run 2 rods straight off the back with a snap weight at 2 ounces. Also have 2 outsiders at 8 1/2 or 10 ft with a 1 ounce weight.

Biggest thing I’ve learned when running more than 1 line on a single side without the use of boards is to make sure your cranks are running straight and true. Always make sure they’re straight and fine tune the eye on the lip if needed. It usually doesn’t take much to get them running straight.

I’m not much of a troller, but my brother and a buddy of mine is. They both use 5′ inside rods at a slight angle out the back and 12-14′ outside rods at a 90 up front.

x2 on the planer boards. Those will be towards the front of the boat. And longer rods right off the back flatlining (with leadcore or just mono). Towards the middle of the boat you can have a dipsey or bottom bouncer. It won’t tangle with the rods right off the back as it’s going down at a much steeper angle.

For any deeper water trolling I typically use planer boards. For trolling shallow on structure I like to keep my lines tangle free by always running deeper diving crankbaits at the front of the boat and shallow ones in the rear.

For example when night trolling shallow rocks in 4-8′ of water I will run a bent lip Shallow Shad Rap or HJ10 out the back of the boat 100-133′ back getting down 5-6′ and at the front I will run an HJ12 out 65-75′ getting down 6-7′.

In the scenario you laid out above I would say you should run the heavier weights at the front of the boat and the lighter weights at the rear.

My wife and I troll a lot with leadcore on two 10 foot rods pointed straight out on the outsides and two heavy snapweight rods slightly wider than boat width on the insides and we run them all near the back of the boat. We run them this way both while trolling contours and in open water. It works very well for us and it’s very rare that our lines tangle. As mentioned earlier, it’s very important that all crankbaits are tuned and running straight. An untuned crankbait, in addition to rarely catching fish, can also be a major reason for tangles lines.
