My wife and I just got back from our 2nd trip up to Five Lakes Lodge on Gull Rock Lake, just south of Red Lake, Ontario.

We fished Saturday-Saturday, and had an absolute blast. There was another IDO’er up there with his 12 year old son, hoping he’ll chime in about the week, we had a great time visiting with them and the others in camp in addition to some great fishing.

The trip had a rough start, we met my in-laws in Red Wing to hand over our kids and dog, and on the way back, my ’14 Subaru Outback totally crapped out on 494. We were going 70mph and there was a huge THUD, heard some slapping noises and we hastily pulled over to the side of the road. Nice. We parked it on the side of the road and after putting it in park, the car kept rolling. We still had a bunch of packing to do, but this ended up being about a 2.5 hour delay as we waited for a tow-truck/someone to come pick us up. We had the car towed to my mechanic and got home and finished packing up the truck/boat. This might be a separate topic to post/talk about, but basically it looks as if the transmission shifted into park while we were going 70, one axel snapped and fell off, the other got completely twisted. It needs a new front differential and tranny. Normal behavior for a car with 70k miles right?

The drive up was uneventful, which suited us. I have spent the last 3 weeks trying to get my boat trailer fixed, then the Subaru crapped out, so we were expecting something catastrophic, but made it up without issue. We saw two moose and a baby black bear on 502, and rolled into camp about 7PM.

Fishing report in coming posts. Stay tuned!

Wow! Glad nothing catastrophic happened when all that car trouble went down. That sounds like something that could have made the car go out of control out of no where. Good thing the weekend was salvaged too. Hopefully you got in some good bourbon after that mess.

Did you pull up the 28’ with the triple 400’s on the back? I would’ve brought my small boat up there, too.

I would’ve also brought a few yetis….you know, one for ice for the other one. Then the one for the ice for the soft sided hopper. Then the one for for my whiskey ice. Then the one for my vodka ice. Then one to keep my beer cold. 5 yetis would probably suffice.

I was the other IDO’er..thanks for starting the thread. Overall the trip was fantastic-had some issues(hot, sunny, mayfly hatch) that Im guessing prevented us(at least thats what Im telling myself) from sticking the pig I was hoping for but with a little work we were able to put up some pretty decent numbers–I had to tell my son that this isnt the norm haha.

    Basically our week consisted of–
6-noonish-fish and get a limit for the day.
Noon to 6ish-clean fish, nap, eat, few brews
then from 7-10pm we pounded them–our best evening was 74 in the boat, had we hooked and/or landed each bite..good lord. All said and done we had maybe 10 between 20-22.5 and overall we were north of 300 eyes…for a guy like me I cant complain.

Then a few games of cribbage and a few leftover cold walleye fillets before bed. I enjoyed meeting PhilTickelson and his wife. Hopefully we were OK neighbors.

Did a side smallie trip one day that was an absolute blast.

I gotta say its humbling when I consider the 1000’s I have invested in tackle and gear and really a few jigs and a few rigs were 85% of our fish. If anyone is ever considering a trip to Gullrock Id be happy to give some more info-just PM me.

Dang, wanted to post on here earlier, but got caught up at home, glad you stopped by! We enjoyed getting to know you guys a bit, absolutely were great neighbors :)! You even shared your evening hot spot with us, which we were extremely grateful for.

My wife and I had a game plan put together for the week basically before we got there, fish the Gull Rock early AM to try and get a big walleye, fish pike in the afternoon, and try to find some more walleye in the evening. Our plan mostly worked, except the pike didn’t cooperate as planned. I won’t write up a daily report, but basically this is what it boiled down to.

We fished early(6-10AM) at The Gull Rock, this is a big reef/underwater point that sticks way out into the main lake, tops out at ~12 feet, surrounded by ~30 feet of water. It’s also on the north end of the lake so it’s about an 8-10 mile jog to get there. It’s one of the closest, substantial, main lake structure spots on that end of the lake, which is connected to Ranger Lake, a fish sanctuary in the spring(shallow, spawning area).

We did well every morning in the spot. Some mornings we caught more numbers, other days we caught bigger fish, but it was consistent. We mainly slow-trolled or drifted lindy rigs or spinner rigs, we didn’t have as much luck vertical jiggin this year, they seemed to want something moving a bit here. This is where the majority of our bigger walleye came from.

We fished a number of islands, points and shorelines and found a few new spots we will remember for next year.

About half way through the week, we joined our neighbor out at his evening spot and just had a blast jigging in 7-9ft of water for walleye/sauger. This was fly-in quality action, real close to camp. We didn’t get any big ones here, but who can argue with non-stop action?

Overall, while I think we caught a bit fewer fish overall than last year, with the heat, sunshine and mayflies, I think we did quite well. I bet we still caught a couple hundred fish, and we had bigger ones overall.

My wife caught a new PB walleye(24.75″) within literally 15 seconds of fishing on our last day. She was sad she hadn’t got any big ones this year, and bang, first fish of the last day. Her very next fish was a 25.25″, which is now her PB.

I caught a 25″, 25.5″, and a 27.5″ walleye(which would have tied my PB if I didn’t have a ridiculous day on the water with FishBlood a couple years ago).

Overall, I think we had ~20 walleye over 19″, with 5 of those being ~25″+, not bad at all for someone with a…well…limited skillset.

Last year we were able to catch 6 pike over 32″ the last day by just trolling floating rapalas over some reefs and around some points. This year, we didn’t catch ANYTHING substantial trolling. I had even bought a bunch of new baits to try, and some more dedicated trolling rods, no dice :(.

I did catch three nice pike, a 35.5″, 38″(PB), and 39″(PB #2), all of which were caught on walleye rods doing walleye things.

35.5″: lindy rig snagged up on a rock, slowed down and ran to back of the boat to try and free it. Hook popped loose of the rock and then was hammered by a pike, off of a point.

38″: after finishing part of a drift on top of the Gull Rock reef, I hit the ‘bunny button’ on my Terrova to get back in position to start over. I was lazy and decided to keep my 1/4 oz jig in the water. Five seconds later, hammered by a pike.

39″: Was slow trolling lindy rigs around a point we had good luck for walleye last year. Got a bite, missed the hookset. Reeled up my line to check my minnow and with the minnow sitting like 5″ below the surface and right in front of my face beside the boat, BIG northern came and just did a little 180 turn and snatched it up. It was wild! This one fought like a mother, took a really long time to get in and had me running all over the boat. I could sense it getting tired and once Katie got it in the night(a fantastic net job I must say), my legs were absolutely shaking. A total rush.

All three of the bigger pike put up awesome battles on light gear, all were released and swam away strong!

Overall, it was a super fun trip, got to meet some great folks and even got more familiar with some returning guests from the year before. We re-booked for next year and can’t wait to get back. If anyone is looking for a great drive-to resort in Ontario, give Ian a call at Five Lakes Lodge. Cabins are clean, boats are great(if you need to rent one), fishing is fantastic and Ian is just a super great dude.

And I’ll echo what Go Spuds said, I’d be happy to share more specifics over PM.

Those are some great fish! It’s always crazy when a pike drills your lure right next to the boat. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been reeling a lure back to the boat and just as it’s coming out of the water it gets crushed by a pike. Scares you half the time.

    Looks like a great trip.

I know right? It caught me off guard big time. Looking back, I wish I was a bit more creative on how we were targeting the pike. All the big one came on medium sized minnows, off of points or reefs, after ‘weird’ minnow actions.

We tried trolling smaller cranks and stuff, but didn’t have any luck. Honestly thought about throwing some medium/big minnows under a bobber off some of the main lake points, but never mustered up the gumption to try it.

    Great reports thanks!
Always fun to see pictures and hear about Canadian adventures.

We are heading up to Dogtooth August 7-14. I think it’ll be our 7-8 year there, starting to get it figured out haha.

Speaking of Pike we had 3 incredible events that has my kid drooling over targeting these guys. 2nd day we are landing a decent sized eye–we threw it back cause it was over 18..anyway as it is near boat side and Bode is getting ready with the net–the largest pike Ive ever seen comes outta nowhere–missed the fish and actually torpedoed the side of the boat. He was in awe.

2 other times while landing eyes all of a sudden the rod bend got heavy and both times norhterns latched on–we almost landed one, it slipped out of net(i have a shallow rubber one) and the last on actually dropped the fish and came back and latched on again–completely T-Boned 2 14-15in walleyes–it was unreal.

That happened to us just once, but man is it crazy when it happens. I never got to see the northern hit, but just felt a smaller walleye get really heavy all of a sudden. I wonder if a big sucker minnow half way down would get the job done for the northern in those situations? I just can’t stop thinking about what I could have tried throwing their way to get more to bite. As much as I love walleye fishing, it’s just more fun catching a ~40″ northern. Last year we were up there, there was a group that had a 42″ and 46″ the week before we got up there. I can’t even imagine catching a 46″ northern…

As a separate update, turns out the tranny totally crapped out on our Subaru. I’m 25k miles past the warranty on that, but luckily Subaru offered an extended warranty for this model as others have been having similar problems with the CVT.

Just got the car back and Subaru put a brand new tranny in for no cost to me, which saves me making the decision on whether to put 3-5k into a car worth 12-13k.
