Just got back from hitting the canal today. My buddy was out there Saturday and did pretty well, so of course I struggled. I pulled leadcore, pulled cranks up higher, slowly live baited and pulled spinners. Yielded only one short eye on a Cabela’s reef runner knockoff. Did do ok on crappies though; pulled 2 out of one spot and 12 out of another, and also missed two smallies that couldn’t get hooked on the crappie jig.

The crappies were really dark, so they were really getting their groove on. A couple of them were pretty decent, but they all went back in.

Sure was planning on doing better on the eyes, but it wasn’t that bad a day, even with the wind. Better than staying home and mowing the yard.

There is a ramp at Plum Creek, but there’s also other ramps throughout the canal. PC, Midway and Gallaghers just to name a few. Some days I’ll hit more than one, just depends.

Brian do you ever fish the canal at midway much? Is fishing the canal much diff then fishing a lake?

Ya, I do make it up to Midway from time to time. Fishing the canal can be different because of all the current you have some days.
It’s manmade and the water level usually fluctuates daily, so it can be tricky sometimes. I still get my handed to me over there on a regular basis.

I’ve only fished for and caught some nice flatties and crappies in Midway.

Is there a lot of structure in the canal or not

It really depends on where you are. Long stretches of nothing, then boom, all kinds of stuff. My best suggestion would be to get the boat in there and watch the graph. That’s the best reference there is.

Where would you recommend launching at for the best chance at eyes
