Was out a few days ago with a couple friends to do some fishing and do some looking around the canal system. And remember, when I say ‘canal’, that really means we could be about anywhere, and this time, that definitely applied. The crappie fishing was kinda slow, but we did manage to get about 55-60 fish in the boat, but the problem was, many of them were pretty small. I did get a few nice ones in the boat though, including a nice 11 1/2″ thick one.

Water temp was all the way down to 44-45 degrees, which is a bit lower than it usually is this time of year. We moved around quite a bit and did a lot of looking, and also hit a few trees with the Mercury, which I wasn’t a big fan of. They stripped a section of the canal of all the trees, so I think those may be the ones I hit. I hit 3 of them going up and down the canal in three different places, so watch out if you make it over there. I don’t remember those trees being there, so who knows how many other new surprises are out there. A lot of trees that used to be there are gone, so things have changed over there once again.

Here’s to hoping the weather will improve, and along with it, the fishing.

Thanks for the report even if the temps are still that low.

The weather the rest of the week looks to be great. Things should really start to heat up all over the state.

You better start running the boat with a chainsaw handy huh? I’m jealous but about ready to get fishing again! Boat is almost 100% ready!

Thanks for the report Brian. How high is the water right now?

No prob guys. Been gone a few days, but I’m back now.

The water was probably 1 1/2′ higher than it was the last time I was out there, but as we know, it varies day to day. There was more current the other day than I would have liked, but it was still ok.

We’re supposed to get some rain this week yet, including this weekend, so who knows what’ll happen out there next. I’ve got some time off this weekend, so I can already tell you the weather will be total crap.

We were all over the canal the other day, and hitting those trees was no picnic. The problem with the higher water was you really couldn’t see anything. Don’t know if they’re loose or stuck in there either. With all the trees that have been cut out of a few places over there, when irrigation starts, it could get real interesting if they’re going to flow down the canal.
