Went out and hit the canal today with my buddy Big Mike. As usual, the water level is way down, probably 2 1/2′, but they were really pounding the water thru hard today for some reason. It was almost like it is in July, current-wise. Made it difficult to stay on the bottom in the holes with jigs, but we did manage to get a little fishing done. Used the ol jig/minnow and I did have what felt like a nice walleye on, and it looks like I picked up right where I left off last year as it came unhooked right under the boat. Had another couple of hits, that was it. I wonder if the swift current moved some of the fish out of the holes closer to the check, because all my action was in a hole a couple miles down. Still, the current was pretty swift there too. Mike didn’t fare as well, but it sure was nice getting out on the water and checking it all out this early. Saw a few eagles, and an absolute ton of ducks. Most of the coves are still frozen in, but the canal is completely clear where we were. I imagine it all is by now, with the moving water.
I’ve got nothing planned next Tuesday, so I hope to make it out somewhere and get some fishing done. Might have to hit the canal again, we’ll see. I know they’re out there, just gotta fine tune it before the water warms up too much.
