Jeffrey report

I was out to Jeffrey Reservoir last Thur, the 2nd. I wasn’t able to get this posted last week, but then again, I knew the fishing pattern wouldn’t change either, so if you’re going after cats and do what we did, you’ll still catch em.

We didn’t start til about dark, and I took down a cooler of blood just for drifting cats. All day at the cabin, Paul, Betsy, Paul’s sister, and I threw cast nets off the dock catching shad, not thinking much of it. Turns out it was a good thing we did. Went out and tried to drift, but there was hardly any wind at all, so we just sat there for a while, and eventually we got the perfect breeze; not too quick, not too slow. Blood was catching the occasional fish, but not like I was expecting.

So I decided to put a shad on. They’re pretty small, only about 3″ at the largest, but I cut em in half, then put 4 chunks total on each hook. Turns out, that’s what they were after. They about ripped rods out of the boat that had shad on. So we went to 2 rods blood, 2 rods shad, and at one time all 4 lit up. We narrowed the hotspot down to a featureless, seemingly random area right out in the middle of the lake. Didn’t see many fish on the graph at all, but they were moving thru that area and would just hammer us when we were there. Fished all night, caught probably 15-18 cats, and who knows how many we missed. It was a fun time too, because they were VERY aggressive, and the average was probably about 2.5 pounds, with some 5s. None over 5.5 lbs, but it sure was a lot of fun.

Thanks for the report fella. I haven’t fished Jeffery for at least 30 years. At that time it was really silting in. Have they done anything in the way of lake improvements up there?

Had a friend named Bill Fattig that moved up there from Central City many a year ago, too. He was a great fishing friend.

    Keep the reports coming, Brian.

    Good fishin’

    Thanks Jorg!

In a word….no. They haven’t done anything that I know of to help with the silt washing into that lake. We used the private cabin owners boat ramp, so we didn’t have to deal with it this time. If you use the public ramp, you have to go around that 1′ of water to get to the main lake. It’s a real pain. They have bouys out there to mark the channel, but you still gotta pay heavy attention to the graph to make sure you don’t beach the boat. My buddy’s dad said when they got their cabin, like 50 years ago, that it was really deep by the dam, like 70 or 80′. Now you’ll struggle to find 15′. The deepest water we saw all weekend was around 25′. That lake has turned into nothing but a playground….lots of skiing and wakeboarding boats. The only bonus about that is all the bikinis we saw on them. Otherwise, it’s just annoying.

Water was the highest I’d ever seen it, too……some houses about had water up on their lawns!

Thing you have to remember, big shooter, is that this old boy is really old and those bikinnis could give the old grey haired one the big one. I really don’t want them to be hammering me on the chest to get me going.

Hottest bikinni place for us this summer was at Calamus. Graham, his son Odis, and I almost couldn’t get away from the dock because of a blue bird that kept flying around that place. Thank god for the glaucoma glasses.

    Good fishin’
