I wasn’t even planning on going, but I decided to make a day of it on my day off, so I grabbed Dad and we headed out to the canal again. It was too nice to sit around and do anything else!
We got there and started catching fish pretty quickly. I was very surprised to see the water temp all the way up to 49, so I knew we’d get into them sooner or later. Most all the crappies were suspended over deeper water, so once you found the depth they were at, you could be busy. They wanted doll flies instead of tubes, so I just stayed with that all day. Black/red/white and black/red/green were the colors we used. They might have hit something else, but why fix what’s not broken?!? From noon to 4pm, I got 48 crappies while my dad got about a dozen. Another buddy was parked about 5 feet away in his Crestliner, and his boat caught probably 25-30 I’d guess. I don’t know what it was, but I definitely had the hot hand. There for a while I was wondering what was wrong when I didn’t have a fish in 45-50 seconds. One of the keys was to not move the jig much at all. That seemed to work a lot better than casting, but we caught some doing that too, just not as many. I think I’ll be back out there again this Friday and Sunday, so we’ll see if they’re still there.
