I wasn’t even planning on going, but I decided to make a day of it on my day off, so I grabbed Dad and we headed out to the canal again. It was too nice to sit around and do anything else!
We got there and started catching fish pretty quickly. I was very surprised to see the water temp all the way up to 49, so I knew we’d get into them sooner or later. Most all the crappies were suspended over deeper water, so once you found the depth they were at, you could be busy. They wanted doll flies instead of tubes, so I just stayed with that all day. Black/red/white and black/red/green were the colors we used. They might have hit something else, but why fix what’s not broken?!? From noon to 4pm, I got 48 crappies while my dad got about a dozen. Another buddy was parked about 5 feet away in his Crestliner, and his boat caught probably 25-30 I’d guess. I don’t know what it was, but I definitely had the hot hand. There for a while I was wondering what was wrong when I didn’t have a fish in 45-50 seconds. One of the keys was to not move the jig much at all. That seemed to work a lot better than casting, but we caught some doing that too, just not as many. I think I’ll be back out there again this Friday and Sunday, so we’ll see if they’re still there.

    Nice job Brian!
Tammy, my fiancee and I had the oportunity to fish the same spot the next day. To our advantage we had the better weather day and therefore the better bite. We fished from 8-12:30 that morning and produced over 120 fish between the two of us. Tammy had three fish in the boat before I dropped my first line it was so hot. Action kept up until about noon and then tapered off. We headed home with 40 beauties for some nice suppers. Thanks to Greg for teaching me the ways of the crappie as those skills and a morning off kept Tammy and I in fish for a great trip. It was 28 degrees and frost was on the jon boat when we got there and it was not warm to say the least with a 20 mile an hour wind out of the south but the fish did not seem to mind.

Think I am going to have to start a Guide service. Since it seems like I teach everbody what to do and then they go catch all the fish and don’t go with me anymore!

Guess I am going to have to just keep the new secrets to myself so at least there will be a few BIG FISH! left!

Now do not go make me feel bad Greg! You stated that you could not go out this weekend as you had stuff to do at the house and get the boat ready.
However props are due where they are due and you sir have earned them as I have not shared the place with others per your request yet turned Tammy on to a great day.
Even if I could get her on fish she has not shut up about getting to go walleye fishing with you this spring in your boat so even if I am not invited, she will be begging you to go

I’ll be at the lake this weekend but I can’t talk Tom into getting his boat out of storage Looks like I’ll be watching everyone fish from the shoreline

Well, I made it back out there again today, and it wasn’t the fast action it was last weekend. Water was all the way up to 53, with it all the way up to 57 in some of the back coves. I managed to catch about a dozen crappies today, with 2-3 big bluegills, a drum, and a small LMB thrown in the mix. Guy I was with, Krueger, caught 1 crappie. It was a tough bite, and I’m sure minnows would have helped…..mainly because we didn’t have any! But it was kind of a tough bite. It seemed like water was being let down the canal too, which probably didn’t help our cause much where we were located. We’ll be back out there again Sunday, so hopefully they’ll cooperate. It won’t be long before they’re spawning over there, if the weather holds out.
