Went out and hit the canal a couple days this last weekend. Wanted to go down to Harlan on Saturday, but I didn’t feel like dealing with the wind on the open water, so I spent time on the canal where there are a few places to hide so you don’t get hit straight on from the wind. Went Friday afternoon, and caught probably 20 crappies with jigs. My buddy Quint that went with me caught one decent crappie. We just couldn’t get them going real well.
On Saturday, Tracy and I fished all day in the same area, and my Dad met us there about 1pm. We mainly threw jigs up into shallow 62 degree water and caught probably 60 fish all day.
Most of the fish seemed to relate better to rocky areas with close access to deep water. Although we did catch a couple that were on the edges of some backwaters.
The hot color was chartreuse it seemed, and although we did catch a couple on minnows, they preferred jigs. Boat control was lots of fun because of the constant winds of 25mph+ and gusts nearing 40mph all day, but we did manage to do all right.
We did catch some smaller crappies, but we caught more crappies that were decent sized, as the pictures show. Including these, we had probably 10 or so in the 11-12″ range, and quite a few from 9-10″. We even managed to catch a few LMB, white bass, and a couple sunfish too. As usual, we let em all go.
Real cold out today, so the water temp isn’t going to be close to 62 again this year. Supposed to be this way for a few days, so things will change. Might try to make it up that way again, we’ll just see what kind of time I have.
