Cool water = hot action

What a day in the canal today. My buddies Jake and Steve were with me, and within the first hour Jake and I managed about 35 crappies. We then picked Steve up and tried something different and it really paid off. I really didn’t think the fish were there, but they sure were. I had one sauger on that came undone, but Jake managed two nice ones including this 20 3/4″ hawg that went 2lbs 11oz. Then Steve blew us away with 5 saugers, the biggest a nice MA at 3lbs 8oz, 21 3/4″. Water temp is not really all that far above freezing, but sometimes it can mean some hot fishing.

Those are some impressive sauger. Did the crappie have any size?

They were real impressive! Made for a good day.

Crappies were mostly small, but a few would have been nice keepers. Today we had one that went 12 1/2″, and another that probably would have gone 11 or close.

Didn’t try the saugers, but did go after the crappie again – got one nice largemouth and a few bigger crappie, including this 13″ one.

Very nice. Was a real struggle for us yesterday in the canal. Managed a few fish, but nothing like we were expecting. Was good getting out on a nice day for the last outing for the year in the boat though. Time to start working on it and get it ready for next year!

Are you sure you want to do that? It’s supposed to be 60 degrees on Saturday.

Wow….I think the topic of this subject should be changed. The action has gone as cold as the water as of late. Did not hook a fish today. Not one. My buddy Steve only managed one and it was the wrong kind. I thought our fish would be there until ice up….looks like you never stop learning.
Bays are starting to ice up, so it won’t be long now. Time to put the boat away it seems.
