Tree Planting

We usually get our trees when the city does an Arbor Day sale on them for a big discount. Will be planting a Honey Locust in the back yard and possibly replanting a Kentucky Coffee that looks like it didn’t make it.

I thought the idea was to plant around Arbor Day, depending on the region/climate

I have heard as soon as you can dig a hole you can plant/move a tree.

I transplanted a young pine two weeks ago. I am also waiting for a 3-5 ft spruce from the two nurseries near me. But they don’t have them yet.

I didn’t make the choice Glenn, she wanted a tree that did not get that big for a specific spot in the backyard. What did you think sucked about them?

Well I hope I don’t regret doing this now lol. She did the research on it. Had a black walnut tree before it was planted way to close to the house and the damn nuts would fall on the roof and it sounded like we were under attack.

Black Walnuts = more Juglone which makes it difficult to grow grass or other plants nearby, the wood is better for woodworking and slabs though

English Walnut = less Juglone and easier to grow other plants nearby…better to eat than black walnuts, the wood pulls in less value though when harvested

We have about 40 English Walnuts behind the house. They would be my choice over a black if I was planting them in my yard.

Can confirm the grass never grew around it. This was a past house. Almost all the trees on my current property have been planted by us.

I got decent grass under my black walnut. My garden is right there also. I just gotta watch what I plant on that end.

I’d be interested in any other things like this that you can get some cheap or at least discounted trees. Looking for dogwood/willows and oak varieties.

The city of Blaine does it every year, you have to sign up and order them right when it starts since they go fast. The list is limited on what tree’s are available.

Search trees on fb market place. Lots of cheap bare root trees on there.
