Traveling with Electronics on a RAM mount

What are your guys thoughts on traveling with your graphs on the RAM mounts? I recently just got an HDS 9 at the console on a RAM mount. I’m always going to take it off if I’m taking a long trip of course, but have you guys had any issues with the mount not staying in place if for example You go to a lake that’s 15-30 minutes away and leave it on?

Never had a problem even with a 6 hour drive.
    Just keep things tight.

As long as you have the right size RAM, no problems. Have not taken mine off for years.

I leave mine on usually, haven’t seen an issue yet. FWIW, I also leave my Helix 5 on a 1″ ball on my pickup dash travelling across the lake in the winter. Walleye Student has seen me drive on lakes…if it can handle that abuse, trailering on roads should be fine. mrgreen

I’ve never had an issue. I make a point to tighten my mounts every time I add oil to the Optimax as part of my routine (which works out to be about 3-4 times a season).

Your post didn’t specify the RAM type, but I never liked the RAM ball mount style. When conditions are rough, the ball style does not hold firm and the unit flops down. The arm style are fine and I really have been happy with the Cisco mounts.

I leave mine mounted all season. Most trips are only 10 miles and a few 25 one way. If going on a long trip I will remove them but do so only for security reasons. My bow and aft units are mounted so that I can swing the arm down resting the unit on the deck. My consol unit is mounted on stainless steel angle brackets and is not going anywhere.

This happens to me, but its because I have the small size ball (1″ diameter) and have a 7″ screen sonar. It probably wouldn’t be much of an issue if the ball was the large 1.5″ size, but I use what came on the boat.

I was running the 1.5″ ball.

I guess going back to the OP, leave them in the boat when trailering. I just think if he fishes big water he’ll be unhappy if using a ball type. I’ve been really impressed with how rock solid the Cisco is.

I was worried I was chewing up the plastic connections on my HB so I have left it mounted and locked for few months now when I use it so often. I run a Traxstecs 10 inch on a six inch plate and that will rip the councel apart before it moves even with an Onix 10 hanging on it. I had an older Ram mount and it was all ways sliding down that I would never considered trailering with. Not fun when bouncing across Superior holding the graph. *I believe all the Trax, Cisco… All are pretty good quality but have only used Trax on the councel.

Ram makes a tool to tighten mount

I’ve had my 1199 on the 2.25″ ball mount and my 5″ on a 1.5″ and they’ve never moved while trailering, I do have a full windshield protecting them though and I put the cover on any trip past 50 miles one way.

The way they sit there is no need to ever move them so I tightened the snot out of the mount, that may help.

FWIW – one of the greatest assets to RAM is they have some give when you hit that unexpected wave. Newtons 3rd law, for evry action there is….

My units very rarely fail & i contribute a lot of credit to my RAM giving a bit versus my unit taking the impact. I’ll gladly adjust & retighten mount versus being without units.

    YMMV

Shouldn’t have any issues with them on the dash. We never did. But like others have said, in rough water, big ball and tool or not, it would never stay up.

I have all Cisco’s in my rig now and they ain’t moving.

I’m not a Ram fan. My preference in order…
