Well this will be the fewest pelts that I have taken in for a second sale on my season in a long, long time. I focused a lot of time on hunting with my daughter this, which I loved – Time well invested!! But, I picked up a project to do that it out of town, and I couldn’t do both – trap and work. So I tripped everything and headed out of town for the majority of the week, tried to get a few set, check, and then trip – repeat. Not exactly a productive way to do things. Now we have the cold snap that is quickly icing everything in and denning up more coon. Hopefully, we get a few warm stretches to keep things moving. I have a nice batch of good sized rats. Not many XX large, and same for the coon. A lot of large and 1x large – but not the quality I normally take.
But for me, its always the excitement of whats next, so I don’t get too caught up in the nickle-dime aspect of it. A lot can still happen between now and my end of season. A few random pics from my trapping folder

    Randy,

Do you log where all your traps are etc… I gotta believe it would be hard to keep track of that many traps on that many properties. I’m lucky if I remember where the keys are in my truck each night.

WI – sold a pile of coon and rats to Groenwald last night, and was very pleased with George’s grading as usual. We only had to negotiate size/grade on about 8 or 9 pelts. These were very borderline on size and had damage – bite marks, bullet hole, scarred up spots with no hair. Otherwise his grading was perfectly in line with what I had.

    Coon Top $25., 20, 18, 12, 4

    Rats Top $10, 8, 7, 4
I had a lot a big nice rats and averaged about $9, which included a lot of rats with bite marks and scars.(Rats were all put up) Coon, I had a lot large, and Xl coon which were too small to try to up to the next size. Averaged just about $18. If I took the 20 or so pups and rags out of the mix, I would have shown a better average – but it is what it is. cinnamon colored pups at 22″ aren’t worth $20! (all sold green)

Just an observation – I watched a lot of guys pulling green coon out of garbage bags, a garbage can, dragging them in the gravel parking lot. 99% of what I saw had blood, burrs, and simply were not cared for. They weren’t brushed out, most were frozen in a ball, and guys wonder why they don’t get a good price. Though i do kind of appreciate it, because it makes my stuff look awesome. Every time I sell, George always compliments me on how nice my stuff looks and is spot on with what I grade my stuff at.

That sounds like me. After the dogs rag them i just throw them in a pile. I am however trying to be a little better. I am trying to keep them cleaner and lay them out flat to freeze. I will see if i get any more for them. But I don’t think it will happen.

Red arrows – Double on rats! Yep on the rotor, great drown weights!
