Transporting an Ice Defence Pro

Any suggestions on how to transport an ice defence pro? I bought one, attached it to my Vexilar and velcroed the part that goes into the water to the case handle. It was -20 degrees and when I got to the lake the piece that goes in the water was broken. I’m guessing the vibration from riding on the box of the snowmobile and the cold temps making the plastic brittle was not a good combination.

I’m bummed about your luck but thank you for proving this thing isn’t worth more than $15 at best.

If it can’t handle a bumpy ride Velcro’d to something in cold temperatures then I would suggest removing the unit all together when done using it and placing it gently into a dedicated molded hard case. Preferably, the garbage can.

Seriously, next time just get a mobile aerator and some tubing and place the tubing about 5”-6” into your hole. The rising air will draw up the same warmer water as that thing did and the bursting bubbles at the surface will keep your hole clear. Put an in-line valve air-valve and now you can adjust the “flow”. Boom, saved ya another 80 bucks. I’m sure you could even find a 12v aerator and splice it right to your flasher battery too.

I did contact ice defence. They said they would repair it at my cost, even though it is brand new

I sent them this picture showing how I had it mounted. I was told their testing showed it is durable at -20 degrees and that it must have been slammed against something for it to break. Funny how the Vexilar held up in the same box for years of trips and the minute I attach the ice defence to it, I’m too rough.

That is a bummer mine rides in a Lithium shuttle all year long.

Did it break being strapped to that handle? Or did it slip out? More of curious than anything else.

Not sure. When I opened up the box. The blue plastic was broken and laying on the bottom of the box and the cord was still through the Velcro loop. Did it break while in the Velcro loop due to the vibration, or did it slip out and broke then, I don’t know.

The only thing I know for sure is that it’s fragile and in my opinion, the only safe way to transport it is to take it off the Vexilar and pack it away in a secure container which is going to be a real PITA. It’s going to be time consuming to use and if it’s that difficult to set up, how much will I use it going forward?

OMG…those things run $100? Crazy, I’d continue talks with them in hopes they can help with something.

I’m from Canada. They are $140 + Tax here. After I pay for shipping both ways and the cost of the replacement parts, I don’t know if it’s worth it.

I’ve had one on my vexilar and Helix sitting untethered to the units, in my shack, through countless snowmobile and atv runs over the last two years, with batteries, engel coolers, and rod cases sliding around as well. Mine has stood up without barely a scratch. I can tell you from experience something major needed to happen to crush it like that.

    Update

I received an email from someone at Cold Nation who said they would replace the unit under warranty. Hats off to them. Only wish I had talked to this person on day 1.
