Looking to buy a 2005 75hp mercury for my 1979 16ft boat. Its rated for a 75hp motor but I’m weary about the weight of this motor at 400 pounds. The old 65hp on the boat is a lotter lighter than that. I was able to take the 65hp off and on myself when I replaced the transom.
Should I worry about the weight of the newer motors?

You sure on the weight of the 75hp? My F150 is only a tad over 500.

Average weight of a 75HP in 1979 was around 275,so I would be concerned about weight. It would sit low and possibly porpoise pretty good.

    I am guessing it is a 4-stroke model,which was fairly”plump”back then(2005).

I will double check the weight, it was a quick search online.
2005 Mercury 75 ELPTO is what I’m looking at.

If it’s a significant difference (say 100lbs) put 125lbs of sand bags in the splash-well and take a test ride before you pull the trigger.

    If it’s an ELPTO, it’s a 2-stroke. 139Kg’s, or 306 pounds.

Thanks for the link. The old motor was 73 Johnson 65hp. I can stand a Chilton landscape stone step on end that ways around 300 pounds and the old 65hp was easier so by experience the difference maybe 50.35 pounds. Thats a scientific approach. devil to be confident I’ll tip the newer motor up on end to compare. Just being silly. Thanks for the link.

I should mention this motor is being sold by a reputable marine dealership up north.

    I have a 90 horse ELPTO and it’s a very reliable motor
