I’m sure many of you guys are familiar with the TV show Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe. I always enjoyed the premise of that show – getting to do different jobs week to week and learning about the huge variety of jobs there are, especially in the trades! I thought that would be a fun show to host. Well, earlier this week I abandoned my cushy office job for a few days to do some real work – roofing with my buddy Dan ( @pailofperch ) and it was an absolute blast! 😁

My late husband Billy was a huge do-it-yourselfer and after 20 years of hanging out with him I’ve gotten to help in a variety of projects and odd jobs. I’ve really missed that since his passing. I’ve done a little roofing before and it didn’t take me long to get my “roof legs” back. It was fun to be outside, despite the chilly temps and slight drizzle, and put in some physical work while hanging out with the guys, telling bad jokes, razzing on each other – all fun things I love and have been missing over this last year and a half. Only one pinched finger, a gash on my leg that I don’t recall getting, sore arms, and windburned cheeks – I’d call it a successful couple of days! 👍💪

Best of it was shooting guns in the evening and then standing around in the driveway with a few beers in the evening. Call me crazy, but I can’t ask for better days than this. 🍻

You really held your own! The weather wasn’t favorable, and when you showed up day 2, we might have questioned your sanity!!! 😂
Sharon really is an incredibly good sport, and a very hard worker! She wore her dirt and bruises proudly.
Thanks for helping us out Sharon! Work isn’t always that much fun!

Good for you Sharon! You picked a good guy to work with too! Will this be a regular thing or a one time deal??

Hopefully somewhere in between! Be fun to do it again but I would probably fry to a crisp during the warm and sunny months if I was fulltime. 🔥

Well to be fair the pros did the shingle laying. I mostly did tear off, shingle hauling, and being a gopher. I did use the air nailer for a little while on one of the cap ridges though and that was fun! But I probably was moving pretty slow with it. 😅🤷‍♀️

Nice job Sharon. I just broke ground on my garage addition so let me know what else you would like to try. I think the game room and you gave me enough of a work out last time you were over.

I tried roofing one summer in college with my in-laws company and it was brutal, back-breaking work. Kudos to both Sharon for trying it and especially to pailofperch for doing that kind of work for a living. Its very physically demanding. applause

Dude, you need a chipping hammer.

Or a hammer drill with a wide chisel tip. Atleast it doesn’t look like there is steel mesh in the thinset.

I have roofed this house twice and it is hard on my knees but it is a 6 pitch and not a 4 so I don’t feel comfortable without roof jacks and it is a 2 story house. If it needs new roofing again, it will be steel

Both options aren’t very fun. Nor friendly to plaster ceilings. Puts hair on the chest <—insert manly man meme hah

Nothing easy bout that job. Busted up all my kitchen & bath flooring in this place, was Put in using concrete cement/cement board/and hurricane screws every 6 inches… hammer drill, sledge hammer, spade bit, an inch at a time.

Did you mean to post a photo of something, Crappie? It just shows a dot!
