As of now, the first tow should be at L&D 2 Hastings late Tuesday night, early Wednesday morning.

Depending on the wind speed and direction, the tow would arrive at L&D #3 Red Wing about 4 hours prior to L&D #2.
The NEIL N. DIEHL is at Genoa heading our way.

The average opening date of the navigation season in
St. Paul for the last 10 years is March 24.

The earliest opening of the Navigational season was March 4th.

Oh wow. Talking to staff on the lock 3 Friday they were thinking it wouldn’t start until after this week.
Sounds like they were not very well informed. I don’t think they are full staff until some day this week.

    Good to know.

Not fully staffed but these guys will call in ahead of time.

“Fully staffed on the 13th. If anyone wants to lock thru after normal business hours M-F, it would require calling someone in for overtime – at the discretion of the Lockmaster. Regular 7×24 operations begin on Sunday the 19th.”

BK, any word on whether this includes L&D 1? Curious since it’s obviously only open to recreational traffic. I called the lock a week ago and they said the st paul district locks would be closed to navigation for another month or so. They were clearly wrong about the downstream locks, but maybe they keep #1 closed longer?

edit: Just re-reading this, maybe they were thinking of the 3/19 date. I had called on 2/27.

Brian, was March 4 opening in 2012?

The earliest date for an up-bound tow to reach Lock and Dam 2 was March 4, in 1983, 1984 and 2000, the USACE said.

The first tow of the 2012 season was the Deanna Ann out of Kentucky. It opened the season March 17.

If anyone else cares, talked to LD1 staff this morning and they won’t be staffed til sometime the week of 3/26.

First barge of the 2017 season just past my house in Fountain City. On it’s way north.
