The hot patterns will likely be sight-fishing and flipping docks in 4 to 6 feet of water. Anglers may also target postspawn fish on long, shallow main-lake points. The main tackle used will be finesse gear, mainly shaky-head worms.

I look forward to seeing this tourney unfold. It should be a good one.

Changes at the top … With a 72nd-place finish on Lake Norman, Land O’Lakes Angler of the Year points leader Dave Lefebre will not end the week king of the hill. Coming into this week’s event, Lefebre led Darrel Robertson by only eight points, and Robertson finished 19 spots ahead of Lefebre on the leaderboard. “It was tough,” Lefebre said. “The fish I was on in practice, I never did catch. It was disgusting.”

Team Chevy pro Larry Nixon of Bee Branch, Ark., caught a final-round total of 10 bass weighing 27 pounds to win $150,000 in the $1.5 million Wal-Mart FLW Tour National Guard Open on Lake Norman. Nixon topped his closest rival, Yamaha pro Jay Yelas of Tyler, Texas, by more than three pounds to earn the win and 200 points toward qualifying for the $2 million Forrest Wood Cup in Hot Springs, Ark., where the winner will earn as much as $1 million – the biggest award in bass fishing – Aug. 5.

“When you get older, all the wins just get sweeter,” said Nixon, who earned his third FLW Tour victory Sunday. “It’s been a while since the last time I was in the final round and this is just great. You never get too old for a bass tournament, and every now and then an old fox will outsmart some of these younger guys on tour.
