Fourth GNWC Tournament Set for Lake Vermilion
By Steve Weisman
GNWC Publicity Director
The final qualifier of the Grand National Walleye Cup’s(GNWC) Minnesota
Circuit is set for Sunday, July 20 at Lake Vermilion.
Anglers will be fishing for a berth in the State Championship at Gull
Lake, September 6-7. GNWC Executive Director sees a very competitive field
at Lake Vermilion. “I’m really looking forward to this fourth qualifier on
the Minnesota Circuit. Lake Vermilion will be a challenge, but I know the
teams will do their homework and figure out what presentations will work
best.”
Also at stake will be the Mercury Team of the Year. “Chad Benson and Joe
Edlund from Bemidji have really run away with this year’s Team of the Year
competition. They have 5 points going into the Lake Vermilion qualifier with
the second place team of Mike Marushin and Jeff Clem at 28 points. However,
there is quite a fight for second place. The team of James Preusse and
Michael Dubois and Bob Steinhoff and Kevin Benz both have 29 points.”
According to Barringer, competing teams should be at Bay View Lodge
between 6-6:30 Sunday morning to sign in and participate in mandatory boat
inspections. The tournament hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Weigh-in begins
precisely at 3 p.m., with awards to follow. The general public is invited to
the weigh-ins to watch and learn what tactics worked during both pre-fishing
and the tournament itself.
“Teams can still sign up on Sunday morning. Just show up, and we’ll take
care of the paperwork. We also invite the public to our weigh-ins. They are
exciting and interviews with the top teams will give the crowd techniques
they can use to help them catch more fish,” noted Barringer.
