Dave C,are you sure the date for the Okoboji tourney is on May 8th??????
That would be opener for walleye season or walleye weekend as it’s called.Would be a terrible time to put a tourney on these waters.

May 8th is the date of the Okoboji Event, this is a bass event and have enough things to avoid in my scheduleing.
This date will work out fine unless Team Supreme anglers are looking to hook walleyes and not bass.

    Dave C,what are you missing???
First of all you have the date wrong for the walleye opener on Okoboji,it is the week-end of the 7th and 8th(May)It is ALWAYS the first Sat in May.
Second of all I was only trying to let you know that there might be a better time for your tourney.
If the weather is nice you can expect about 10,000 anglers to be in the area that week-end.
Dave C,do you run these tourneys? I once thought of entering a Team Supreme event with my boys in the future. But I guess if I’m trying to catch eyes that week-end it wouldn’t work to well.

Ryan,I got that openier date off the IA. D.N.R web site that states, closed season Feb.15 till April 30,so I guessed the openier was that week-end, I still must have missed something.

Never the less there are bass events every weekend in May on Okoboji and we where lucky to get a date, we applied in Oct. 2004.

So we will not change this date,if your in the area stop in and watch the weigh-in.

Dave, this is what I think happened.More in likely the DNR site you got the info from was outdated.
The closed season this year(2005)runs from Feb 15 until May 6,2005.
So your tourney weigh in must be on a Sunday?I think you guys had a tourney in late May last year.I had a guide trip that day about the time you guys had to weigh in.You going to weigh in at Emersons again?

Ryan,we were there mid May and IA.division Team Supreme was the week before.

The tourny was and is this year on Sun.

Sun. May 8 is Mothers day ,so all the good husbands and sons should be home with Mom, so we should have the lake all to ourselves.

We will take off and weigh-in at Emerson Bay.

    Ryan,

Be nice….. The event is a traditional tournament hosted every May. This year is does conflick with the opener however many of the MN bass fishermen visit the great state of iowa to enjoy a little early season fishing. For this reason Team Supreme chose to continue this event. I understand the plethera of boats however the lake is still public and everyone has a right to the resource. While I do not think we should cater to the walleye anglers I also think we should not cater to the bass anglers. Everyone who ownes a valid Iowa fishing liscense is offered the same oppertunity.

In that I say we all set aside our differences and enjoy both the first tournament of the season for bass fishermen and the opener for walleyes.

Unfortunately I will not be able to make this tourney however if I were from MN looking forward to my annual first tourney of the year I would more than gladly take the good with the bad.

JC, Ryan was trying to be nice. I think his post is being misunderstood. The message is that the tourney anglers are going to run into a nightmare. Walleye opener in Boji is an absolute zoo (it does open May 7 this year). Driving, parking, launching, fishing, and finding a place to stay will be a huge challenge. You’ll want to let the tourney anglers know this ahead of time so they’re prepared.

This has nothing to do with walleye versus bass. That’s just silly.

I helped prefish with my son Nate two years ago on Okoboji for the RCL Walleye Leaque Championship during a time that was away from anything else going on and the weekend of the tournament with ”all the normal” boat traffic and even with no wind you felt like you were in a blender as you were tossed around in your boat from waves coming at you from all 4 sides just from all the boat traffic on the water. The opener I would think would be very terrible from all the traffic. This is ”a very very high commericalized lake” with people from all over from many states coming to this body of water. It is a vacation meca so to speak. I grew up in Fort Dodge, Iowa and my family vacationed there for years. And add a walleye fishing opener to that weekend it will be a mess. This is what what Ryan and Wade are trying to warn you of so you know what to expect if its on that weekend.
    Thanks, Bill

OK, First let me explain. The tournament date was given out and not the best choice. Team Supreme has had this tournament for as many years as I can remember and many of the guys fishing are from MN. This being said it is the frst chance they really get to comptete in a tourney environment. Changing the data is not an option just an unfortunate fact we all have to live with. My point was that this could either happen or not and with that choice having the tournament is what was chosen.
I did PM ryan to let him know I was not trying to defend or make this a bass vs walleye deal only to infom everyone that this was the resoning. I did receive a plethera of email both against this tourney and for it however; I did not mean to toss riverly into the mix. And just forreference Ryan has helped me out numerous times and I extend my thanks and best reguards. So the back and forth postings are in my opinion silly. Now that I think / hope I exteneded my thoughts properly this time I hope this issues is mute. Yes, I do think it will be a zoo however; I think we will all be able to play along nicely…. Big hope, I know.

Turns out the tournament was held during the walleye opener. Was there problems? Was it a Zoo? Hardly! Not many guys fishing at all. But thats how it usually is during the Iowa walleye opener. Sure there are usually more boats but most of them are anchored in the middle of the lake anyways. Perfect date if you ask me!
