Last week saw myself and over 600 other anglers competing for 3 boats and lost of cash and prizes on Lake Wheeler in Alabama.

I had a tough time but I’m still satisfied with my performance. I didn’t want to fish the popular Decatur flats because I knew I could not compete with the local anglers there so I opted for the more familiar river fishing up the Tennessee River near Guntersville Dam.
The first day I brought in only 4lbs and ended up in 208th place but I learned alot about the small area I was fishing. It had an area that bass would chase in shad and feed on them at some point during the day. On day 2 I focused on that and about mid day I caught a limit and culled several to bring in over 7lbs. This shot me up to 94th place. I was confident I cross the magic 86th spot and get in the money. On day 3 however the bass were very late moving in and I caught only dinks most of the day. With only 30 minutes to go before I had to make the 35 mile run back to the ramp the fish started turning on. We caught our only keepers in the last 30 minutes. My partner got 2 and I had 2 but the 2nd was bearly touching the line and I was scared to try to weigh him. I through him back and I’m not sure if I made the right call or not but I didn’t want to risk losing a pound if they didn’t bump him. Once all was said and done I ended up 139th. Sounds bad, but I did best over 75% of the field.
This was a great even and was very smoothly run. Over 600 anglers and there was never much of a line at the ramp or anywhere else. Next year we go to the Red River in Lousianna and that should be right up a river rat’s alley.
