Recently someone asked me that question. First let me answer it from a strick business sense.

Let’s face it at nearly all of the AAA,(not FLW,BASS,PWT.OR RCL top series) team tourneys… and individual events the checks even first place hardly cover the two partner’s expense if they prefish like they must.

The only reasons to fish these events is to qualify for the National Championship. These events championship usually include a much larger purse and even rigged boats as a prize.

Don’t laugh to hard, but I frankly have only one goal in qualifying events and that is to “Qualify for the Championship” In some cases where I fish bodies of water I don’t frequent…I go there to find some easy fish to assure receiving points that are needed to fish the championship.

Winning is hardly ever a consideration against a strong set of locals, so my next target is the big fish award. I have won a large number of these over the years. Often it is the second biggest check in the Tourney!!! Then I figure out what it will take to win and “”””TRY”””” to find them, but I don’t sweat it.

Dan Stears a solid PWT competitor takes a lot of heat for fishing a lot of tourneys other than the PWT and RCL.

We sat at and RCL a year ago and talked about the benefits in length. But the main benifit was just staying sharp for competition. His win at Lake of the Woods last year and his annual quality results really say it all.

A select few who have the time and money,(the entry fees are often quite large and the locations quite spread out), fish the large purse events around the country where there are guaranteed purses.

Now let me tell you what I feel are the other benefits:

#1 Guide customers realize the dedication and consistancy it takes to qualify for Championships year after year…A few sponsors do also.

#2 The overall learning experience and exposure to new and more successful techniques is extremely valuable. I have said many times that.. “There is nothing I can think that I know about fishing that I didn’t learn from someone else”. Add a substantial dose of “TIME ON THE WATER”, to hone and improve what you have learned and you have a solid formula.

Hope this answers the questions some of you might have about tourney fishing.

A lot of what Lawrence says makes sense,I talk to a lot of B.F.L anglers that they feel they are donateing money, either to make it to the championship or qualilfy for Everstart. Some of the things you talk about does show the reason why you must fish a circiut with a huge championship for the anglers.Thats why I’m proud to be involed with http://www.teamsupremetournaments.com the best value in fishing.

I would also agree and glad Lawrence brought this to light. Another good reason is many of us can’t travel as much as some of the bigger circuits require do to work or limited vacation time. At the same time we should not be shutout from some of the bigger payouts.

Team Supreme is a fine organization, I agree, but it has always been hard for me to find a reliable partner to campaign a team circuit. This is why I prefer the draw trail. If a draw works for you I would suggest checking out the American Bass Angler. I would bet we are the easiest circuit to qualify for the National Championship and it occurs in the same year.

We may be small in the area because we are new but we are the largest tournament organization in the nation for the non-pro angler. We will be giving out 3 fully rigged and loaded Triton TR-21’s this year.

One for the winner of the Championship.
    One for AOY
One is draw-boat and you are entered just for fishing the district tournaments!

Last year over $340,000 was given away at the National. Come get a piece of it this year.

Ken, I also agree with you.I hope the A.B.A. Always stays with the draw format.Draw formats are good for the angler who is willing to learn from a stranger and the anglers must fish each others areas. This is good for all of tournament fishing.

I wish more people felt that way. It is difficult to break the “team format only” response I see from river fishermen.
