Now this might not seem like a big deal to many of you but Saturday night our 57″ sturgeon had around a 7″ lamprey attached. Of course it came off and wiggled around on the floor of the boat. Ish.

Well, being the professional that I am, I wasn’t going to scream like a Nancy and ask the others in the boat to throw it out for me. So I grabbed it in it’s mid section and made a quick flip out the side of the boat.

All the while I was silently screaming like a Nancy in my mind.

Don’t toss those things back in alive. Treat them like a snake. Cute their head off them throw them over. No need for either of those things on this earth. Yuk !!!

    What’s the point of that?

Brian, I’ve been told grabbing them by the mid section only angers them and can damage their internal organs. The best way to release them is let it latch onto your wrist and lower it into the water. Once it is nourished by your blood, it will safely release itself.

Depends what kind of lamprey, doesn’t it? Sea lampreys are invasive, but there are other native lampreys…

I may be wrong here – But Native or not. Anything that looks like a snake and is sucking the blood out of a Game fish, die’s if it comes into my boat.

Aren’t they cute. They probably just want to snuggle.

    Yeah…no.

It’s lucky it didn’t get the pliers.

I’m not up on my lamprey Id, but I’m going to guess this was a chestnut which is native. I don’t believe we have sea lamprey’s down this way.

Aww, I think they’re kind of cute! But then again I like bugs, critters, and snakes. Are they smooth or rough to the touch? I just found a millipede and was holding it for a while – my coworkers just shake their heads and smile at “that odd lady up front who’s playing with bugs again.” grin

I had a mental shut down when I touched it. I don’t remember anything because of all the screaming going on in my head.

    But it looked smooth.

There is something cool about pulling a lamprey off a vinyl seat and it sounding like velcro.

I demonstrate the proper method for dealing with a sea lamprey in this video, recorded by Dave Koonce, at the 0:45 second mark. I tried a pliers first but that method is too… fussy.

You know you’ve perfected the technique when you get all the “innerds” to forceful expel out the pooper.

    Sea Lamprey’s die.

Seems they like fish without scales more then others although I have found them on a crappie and carp several times.

…Most kinds fish must get some I would think.? For me I see the most on 2 species that I do not fish for. That being Northerns and Carp. The next would be Walleyes cuss that’s what I fish for 80% of time… … rrr

Brian 7″ is a little one I’ve seen them at 18″. I pulled it off (it was embedded on the fish) and chopped in in 1/2 then threw it back.
