Topwater still working

Topwater is always hit & miss. Sometimes if I’m on a lake that usually does well but is “off” that day… I’ll just hit a handful of high percentage spots with an Arashi Cover Pop. Sometimes that slow, walk-the-frydog action will give them just a little longer to get irritated than a Choppo/buzzer. Lol

But right now yeah, I have heard the deeper water crank bite is pretty good. We tried it a little yesterday and didn’t get hit, but didn’t on Topwater either. Gotta keep trying things this year…

Yesterday the deep crank didn’t work at all for me. Not much did really. I did get a 2-3 lb bass to launch out of the water at a spook. Only problem was he completely missed it…. doah

Topwater popper was quite good last night for smallmouth. Caught a number in shallow water on top of rocks, but also some out past the edges over deeper (15ft+) water too, and noticed quite a few surfacing out deep.

The spook bite has been slowly heating up the last couple times I’ve been out.

Never have I ever caught a fish on a spook.

It’s great that everyone has a favorite bait, especially topwater.

My go to topwater. The key is to get is to get on top of a weed flat or point. You can fish it where weeds are just barely under the water surface or 10 feet under it. They call up bass from deep water like crazy. I caught a bass in 25 feet of water on a spook. It was nuts.

Last night took a 3-hour trip. The first spot there was baitfish but didn’t get a bite. The second spot has been my most consistent area for throwing a frog all year. Saw something get busted along the rice line so I stopped there. There are now spots starting to open up behind the rice wall. I made a cast to one of those openings and instantly got wrecked by a 16-incher. Thought I may be onto something. Nope, the only bass I got last night.

A friend and I caught 18 bass and a walleye under the moon last night. Got every fish on a black spinner bait. The biggest bass I caught was 19 inches.

I gave a topwater about 15 minutes and nothing hit it.

If you know your good spots, 15min is all it takes, that bite seems to be very on or very off.

The big girls were chomping on a frog on Saturday evening. Got a 5,a high 4,and an almost 4lb 18-inch fish. Then some duck hunter with an extremely loud engine ran through the area and shut the fish down. Didn’t get another blow-up. Had one fish dog me. Could have been a dogfish, pike, or bass. It just intimidated the frog, didn’t hit it.

Duck hunting isn’t open yet. There is an early goose season open.

He was scoping for where the ducks are at running through the rice and reeds at 20+ mph. I saw the guy do it a couple of times last year before they opened up.

Ah gotcha, so he was scouting, not hunting.

There is also a youth waterfowl hunt next weekend…

The last three trips I’ve been catching them on a Bobby’s Perfect Frog, Phat Frog, Paycheck Baits Repo Man, R2S Bubble Walker, and Whopper Plopper 130. Mostly I am fishing rice, reeds, and pads with the frog.
