Looking to start a little Musky habit, on top of my walleye addiction. What 3 Musky lures and colors would you recommend starting out with?

Top Raider in black, cowgirl in black with chartreuse blades and a black and orange bulldog would be a good start.

Suick, Mepps Musky Killer, surface bait like a hawg wobbler, you have the basics covered and go from there

The 3 baits that see the most pool time are Black and Nickel DCG or Supermodel, Black Top Raider or a Walleye colored pounder.

Black, orange and pink. Double spinner with size 10s or 8s. A topwater, maybe a lowrider. Then either a crank bait or glide bait.

IF you are just starting out, you might have the gear to start throwing cowgirls right away, so you might want to stick with the basics

    Bucktail ( Ghosttails / Buchertails )
    Black / nickel blade
    Black / orange blade

    Topwater
Lee Lure Water Chopper / Loon

    Crankbait
Rapela Super Shad Rap / Firetiger

Once you become more addicted you will have ample opportunity to upgrade your gear to much heavier baits

@Randy it would be primarily metro lakes w/ Vermillion, Leech and Rainy (?) mixed in.

For me it’s a Pounder, a Phantom Soft tail, and a Jr Cowgirl or similar. I move the most fish on brown/white or Perch colored combos. Time of year makes a big difference to me too, I guess that is why we end up with boxes full )

    Please, a “little” Muskie habit?
Way back in the day I boated a lot of nice ski’s and big pike on Reef Hawgs.
Be careful if you get the big Cowgirls, they’ll fry an under matched reel.

I’m getting the itch for some musky action and bought a heavy action bait cast rod at the musky expo today. I looked at but held out on buying a reel, so my question is what decent reels are out there with hopefully not having to take out a second mortgage?

Most guys go with either the Calcutta 400D, or Abu Garcia NACL 60 for their standard musky reels. Either one will handle pretty much anything you want to throw except if you want to burn cowgirls, then you should check out the Tranx.

If you watch for them, deals can be had for used ones.

I 2nd the Nacl. If you are going to cast big baits, I recommend spending the $250-$300 to get a reel that will hold up. If you want to save a little $$, look at the Lexa 300 or the Okuma Komodo, though I’m not convinced they are worth saving $50-$75. If you can spend more, the Calcuta D is awesome too.

there’s the lures people use the most, and then there’s the lures that catch fish the most. ;-)

i just looked over 10+ years of statistics from my muskie club (with ~1000 fish/year), and almost 70% of our fish are caught on either bucktails or crankbaits. those same statistics suggest that jerkbaits/topwater/plastic are much more niche lures for specific applications.

    i’d get:
    – double showgirl
    – depthraider (can cast and troll)
    – phantom softtail

When I started Muskie fishing in the mid eighties I only bought Garcia 6500’s, two of them were before they added the thumb bar. Three of them still work very well and have fifteen years of heavy use. I’ll have to buy a new reel for the big baits available nowadays but will use the 6500s til they die.
I dug the old tackle boxes over the weekend and it looks like a vintage tackle collection!
My three biggest fish came on…
    1. Large homemade tandem spin with a rubber skirt
    2. MG bucktail, gold blades with brn/yellow hair (Walleye)
    3. Large Reef Hawg, bullhead pattern.

I would for sure get some kind of cowgirl or even showgirl. Possibly both if you can. Gold or walleye color has worked well for me on metro lakes. You mentioned vermilion and I would for sure add a smaller giant killer or some inline spinner around that size. Some sort of prop style topwater would be a good idea. Also don’t forget about crankbaits. Not a ton of people throw them and they are great for deeper weed edges and also to bang off of rocks. And of course a phantom soft tail. I like the 6 inch in perch color. You cant forget some bulldawgs too! They are a great species to chase!

I would have to go with a jointed smimwhiz perch , Depth raider perch, hawg wobbler black, DK.
