If it’s a clean bottom, I like a medium sized floating rapala on a slip sinker. Bring in slow and stop, some twitch.
I like a spinnerbait, buzz bait, and a crank bait. Once the water temps drop below 50, I hang it up otherwise I would probably add a jerk bait or other slower presentation to the mix.

Topwater is usually there for me but this fall I couldn’t get anything to hit a topwater. Spooks are usually my go to but nothing. Poppers and ploppers weren’t getting bit either. Strange Fall for me this year.
•Topwater: Arashi Cover Pop
•Skipping under docks: Caffeine Shad
•Open water: Project Z 3/4oz Chatterbait
•Vegetation: AT Grassmaster jig or Mop Jig
Topwater that can break ice
Docks? Up on shore! Going for squirrels?
Ok-just bummed that we don’t have good open water or ice-plus we will probably melt the ice we do have while I am out of town for turkey day and start the refreeze when I get back!

I spent most of my fishing time in October going after walleye from shore at Mille Lacs. I only caught 1 topwater fish for the month. That is down from 44 in October last year and 107 in 2016. Other than on hollow body frogs 2018 was a pretty brutal topwater bite for me.
Shore fishing for <strong class=”ido-tag-strong”>walleye sounds like fun-how did that go?
The bite was pretty stout on all but a couple of trips. I would usually catch 9-15 fish a night with most of them being 19-22″ and with just as many 23-27″ as 14-19″‘s. Best Fall bite I’ve ever experienced out there from shore. I didn’t get any really big fish though. My last three trips average size of fish definitely picked up. It’s too bad temps had to go so far below normal this month. If that didn’t happen I might have gotten a shot at a true giant or two.
So how did you find your spots and what did you use? Would not think of ML as a shore fishing spot-some years it gets cold, I put the boat into storage then of course we get afternoons in the 60s would be nice to be able to fish from shore in that case—–Thanks
I live about 20 miles SW of Eddy’s Jetty. That is where I did all my fishing this Fall. I’ve fished there ever since I moved up here in 2003. I caught the most fish on a suspending jerk bait (H20 Xpress Ultimate Jerk Shad, which is basically a Megabass 110 knockoff for Academy Sports. I also got few on a Husky Jerk, but I only threw that a couple of times). I also caught a lot of fish on Paddletail Swimbaits (Bass Pro Speed Shad’s, Rage Swimmer’s, and Grass Pig’s). On one night they wanted an X-Rap Shad Shallow and I got a couple of fish on a Rippin Rap in early October. In the past, I’ve also put on Wader’s and fished where the inlet from Whitefish Lake comes in at Wigwam Bay. I’ve been told by the bar owners at Mac’s Twin Bay that they allow fishing there as well, but I’ve never tried that spot. Sure looks like it would be good off that little point.
Nice thanks!- Think if you wanted to do the night thing you could fish ‘skis after 10-just put the walleye stuff in the car. Great tip for next year.
I still catch more bass on soft plastics in Fall than any other lure probably because I have confidence in them. I also like a spook and a square bill
I love spooks. My go to topwater especially in the fall. I am the same as you when it comes to plastics. It’s probably what I’m best at. Trigging, shaky heads etc. Crank is a close second.
I mostly try to fish them with a faster moving lure to get a reactive strike in the fall. Once the temp drops below 50, I’m done. And that happened pretty early this season.
