I got it bad this year. For some reason the last 2 weeks all I can think about is getting on the ice. I must have watched 100 Youtube videos about Lake of the Woods in that time. It got so bad that I bought an FLX-28, replaced all the line on all my reels, organized then reorganized my tackle bags then realized I needed more so I went online shopping again. I’ve checked all my batteries and have the Otter sitting in the yard set up to “air out”, and after this I’ll probably go rod shopping. I’m thinking it must have to do with football season starting, but it’s never been this bad.

Birds, Bucks, THEN ice…I’m super pumped for the first two after sitting out last season due to a new shoulder, and then a new baby.

I am working on a couple of new ice rods and have 200 new ice jigs painted and waiting for hair. I also have made 5 orders in the last 2 weeks for other ice fishing related stuff.
I saw a cheap pontoon on CL. You could pick it up, drill a couple of holes in it, set up your Otter on it, and anchor it out in the lake. It would kind of feel like ice fishing.September 14, 2018 at 11:45 am #1797559Ill be using Archery season and fall fishing to kill time until ice, cce cant come soon enough for this guy!
September 14, 2018 at 12:47 pm #1797579I agree with you guys about the other activities, but for some reason I keep looking past all of that. Although after work today I will be heading up north for opening archery season. Hopefully this gets me back on focus for fall muskies.
September 14, 2018 at 1:34 pm #1797592im usually really amped up for ice but fall is my favorite and this year I have hunting on my mind. Just thinking about heading up to the shack to get things ready for deer camp has me pumped
September 14, 2018 at 2:39 pm #1797604I’ve been super excited my self. But I have been goose hunting to kill time. Soon to be duck hunting. Then come on ice. I hope we get some good early ice this year
September 14, 2018 at 2:46 pm #1797606Order of Operations from end of July going forward to Ice Out
-High School Football: the purest form of the sport and coaching is a time-eating lifestyle
-Fall Perch Fishing: equally as good as the Spring when you hit the right window but kept quite secretive with no other anglers for miles
-Fall River Walleye Fishing: Gun Hunting = empty rivers with hungry big fish putting on the feedbags
-Ice Fishing Season: Weekend after Thanksgiving until January 1st when everyone starts driving out or riding wheelers all over bringing out their littering mobiles(wheelhouses) on feet of ice when fish are most lethargic
-Second Ice Fishing Season: ~Second week of March until ice out (crowds start to thin, no houses or trucks, fish are more active)
September 14, 2018 at 2:49 pm #1797607Bow hunting is currently the furthest thing from my mind as a secondary hobby. I buy a license but let most of the die-hard relatives handle the early season hunting. If I’m sweating in the woods or fighting off bugs, that’s not bow hunting season. I try to sneak out in late October into a few of our best sanctuary stands during the rut.
September 14, 2018 at 6:04 pm #1797630Late summer (around early to mid August) I get the itch for fall and ice, equally as bad. First week in October is fishing Rainy Lake for 4 to 5 days (depending on the year), then by mid October Im fishing local lakes for fall walleyes all the way to ice up, usually have a 1 week gap between open water and walkable ice
Leaving for Rainy Lake on 10/3.

I understand your thinking. Living in Wisconsin you have heard the phrase ” Brewers will win the World Series when hell freezes over.” So with the Brewers contending I guess it’s logical to start thinking about ice.
September 17, 2018 at 5:26 pm #1798063I wait until the Fall bite dies off to get excited about hardwater season. Makes the month in between seasons awful tough to sit through if you’re already thinking about. Plus, the Fall bite is just too good to want ice to come already.

I didn’t re-line my reels, but will soon. I’d go nuts waiting if I didn’t bow hunt, then rifle hunt, then black powder hunt too. Keep planning and getting ready. The water will be frozen before we know it!! Hope you have a great winter!!
