Too soon…

Labeled this topic “too soon” for a few reasons. Last week Tuesday my grandfather passed away at the age of 73. This past weekend I drove to northern Wisconsin to attend his funeral. From November 2014 deer season (when I seen him last) to January 20th he had lost 120 lbs. Cancer sure is a horrible disease. My grandfather along with my dad introduced me to walleye fishing at a young age. His funeral was in Ashland, Wi and just so happened I was going to be driving right by the St. Croix rod company store in Park Falls, Wi on my way back. Store is open on Sunday’s so you have to stop, right? Ended up leaving with the New AVID X in 7′ ML. My father also purchased a new rod. Now all we can think about is planning a spring fishing trip. We have taken the whole first week of April off. As we get closer to April we will decide on where we are headed. Couple of options are Rainy River, Pool 4(everts) and the Fox river in Depere. I think leaving the decision open now and deciding last minute will put us on the best bite. Predicting weather and river conditions this far out is impossible but I absoluty can not wait to get out there with my dad and make more memories. Making memories is what it’s all about because after there gone that is all you will have left.

Trez – Sorry to hear the sad news about your grandfather.

Great picture of what I assume is 4 generations of your family.

As for spring walleye fishing, I would add Peshtigo and Menominee river spring walleye runs to your options list!

Will do Joel. Thanks for the advise. That indeed is 4 generations. I also have a 5 generations photo with my son, me, my dad, my grandma and my great great grandmother.

Tresz84, sorry to hear of your loss of your Grandfather. Sounds like he was a great influence on your life. Its so easy to feel down in sorrow with the loss, but reflecting back and making plans for the future pays great respect to him. Sounds like you and your Father are already on that path.

Joel added a couple great places! In addition to places, you may want to toss in the idea of new techniques as well. So many guys focus on jigging in the spring. The night time crank bite when the timing is right is awesome as well.

I lost my mom last month, and she is the one who always took me fishing growing up…
I learned I have to keep doing the things I enjoy and not sit there sad about it.

I am sorry about your grandfather.

Prayers for you Tresz84, and you as well gbfan10. My father lost a 5-year battle to cancer when I was in high school and my mother is battling her third round of the nasty stuff as well. I hate to even say the word. Just know I understand your situation as do many others on here as well.

Find your “therapy” and take part in it frequently. For me, it was (and still is) fishing.

Sorry for you loss of your grandfather. On your trip release the first walleye caught in honner of gramps, that will be him saying I’m still with you all.

Tresz84. Have you ever fished Lake Erie? The jig bite is crazy good. The first week in April can be the perfect timing sometimes. Just a thought.

    Sorry for your loss!

Trolling for the Big girls is always a nice change of pace after catching cookie cutter 22″-26″ eyes all morning.

Sorry to hear about the loss. As others have said honoring him by continuing to enjoy the things he enjoyed with you is the best way not only to cope but to remember your grandfather. It seems like everyone of us on IDO have that person in our lives that taught us about the joys of fishing, took us out as little tykes and just laughed and watched us fish as novices. Then we all inevitably grow up into bigger and better fisherman and we never can thank those who taught us, showed us the joy and took us fishing enough. Because of his passion and willingness to share a pastime, he gave you one of the greatest gifts of all and one that keeps on giving. In the end all we have are moments, flashes in our memories that are burned there forever of the laughter, fun and camaraderie shared with that person on the water, just thank the lord you had the good times and memories together.
