Todays rant

Not so much a rant but how disappointed i’m becoming with people.

First off…I know what I do is illegal. I do.

For 20 years i have plowed snow from my driveway across the street into the ditch on the other side. For 20 years I have been careful not to leave big furrows or clumps of snow, especially if it was heavy snow. So today I’ve got a couple of inches of fluffy snow, fluffy to the point I can sweep it with a broom. So I run out and plow the driveway, more for something to do then because it needs it. I get a call from the sheriffs office verifying my name and address. Then they ask if I plow my driveway and I reply yes with a chuckle because I know right where the conversation is going. I could tell the person on the other end was mad and thinking I wasn’t taking this life threatening situation serious. They proceeded to tell me I couldn’t plow the snow across the road. I replied OK. That also didn’t seem to sit right. I think they thought I was going to apologize and say how sorry I was. I wasn’t then nor at any time in the future. At the time of the call I was getting gas in the truck so upon returning home I thought “boy I must have really left a bunch of snow”. Hardly a shovelful.

Now, I’m not complaining about the sheriffs department, they have a job to do. Somebody calls and complains they must respond with a follow up call which they did. To the coward that doesn’t have enough guts to stop and talk to me about it well, lets just say you will have future chances. I’ll pay the fine.

Alright. I feel a bit better now. lol

My neighbor across the street once complained to my face because of the way I plowed my driveway. I used to push everything into the street, then push it all down a ways and push it up into my yard. Keeps the tall piles from the plow trucks and my plow away from the edge of my driveway and cleans everything up nicely. He said it was an unnecessary eye-sore to see large snow piles in the middle of MY YARD. I just smiled and walked away.

I now use a snow blower, as it’s just easier for the size of my driveway.

So what communist subdivision do you live in and why? Sorry if I’m a little offensive. I live on street where if you don’t “discuss things” face-to-face, you might as well put a for sale sign in your yard…. OR, I’ll put it in there for you as one of my neighbors found out about 15 years ago. Wow, cop calls you because you plowed a little snow across the street and another one with a neighbor that gets eye-sores. Those neighbors would be butt-sore living near me. Wonder what they would do if you had about 75-90 coon carcasses piled in your driveway before you had a chance to dispose of them.

Question for you law enforcement guys. Why would they call my cell number and not my home number?

Gosh I didn’t know the sheriffs department made calls to a home owner. I would think they would knock on your door for a face to face talk.

    My wife won’t move.

That I can relate to. I built a spec home and the plan was to sell it in 24 months. On month number 20, she called the box “home”. Almost 16 years later….here I am in my box and her home.

Couldn’t imagine having that conversation, how could a man guy dude not laugh a little. Who has the time to get upset about something so stupid, without a face to face if it was actually a big enough issue to get upset about?

It’s funny how robotic some people become by the “rule of law”.

Dutch the police would call your cell because that’s the highest probability of reaching you. They can only get a hold of you if you’re home if the call the land line. Chances are good that they can get a hold of you on your cell.

It’s really not that big a deal. Just a couple things bothered me about it. One anybody would even bother calling it in. Two, how would the sheriffs department have my cell number and why would they call it.

    It wasn’t my friends for 2 reasons……

    1) I have no friends.

    2) How would they know I was plowing?

Oh well, it’s over until the next time it snows and I plow my driveway.

For clarification, I’m assuming you are plowing this snow onto somebody else’s lawn correct?

No, across the county road into the ditch. The ditch fronts a field but there is no field access anywhere along this side of the field.

Are you more mad that the “Government” has your cell number? They have it because you gave it to them or called them with it and some point. They would call the most recent number they have for you.

I thought about that, but wasn’t going there jester

It very well might have been the city plow truck driver that saw the tracks/trail across the street and after 14 hours of plowing was in a bad mood. Did you forget his Christmas bonus this year…

I have no idea who called the sheriff. It might of been the county road plow driver.

Plowing rural roads is one of the toughest things a plow driver can do.

Wing out, dump box up and loaded with sand for traction, and making tracks…

If the pile that you pushed into ditch is not beyond where the wing plow extends you might as well put a big rock there. Give your county plow driver a break…

Probably because he was sitting outside your house and you didn’t come to the door? Reasonable deduction would tell him not to waste his time calling a number you weren’t going to answer.

It’s really not that hard to do, even for the general public. If you gave me your name, I can about guarantee I could have your cell number in less than a minute from some form of public record. It’s creepy how easy stuff like that is to find. If it’s easy for the public, think how easy it is for an LEO.

I plow commercial props in the winter more for something to do than anything. It’s illegal in most places to plow across roads and onto puplic property. I have not been cited , but have been warned in the past for the same thing.

I agree and here’s a real world example why they don’t like it. My grandfather worked for the North Dakota Highway Department and plowed roads in the winter. He was plowing one night and a farmer had pushed all of his driveway snow out onto the state highway and left it in a big pile. When his plow and swing arm came in contact with this pile it swung the whole truck around and he ended up backwards in the ditch. He then spent a couple hours shoveling and pulling sand from the truck to use for traction as there was no other help in the area. It could have been a lot worse than a sore back from shoveling.

Dutch – In all fairness, your pile at the end of your driveway wasn’t nearly as bad as my example above but they may have a no tolerance policy in Mille Lacs county. They might have thought they would warn you when it was small so the next BIG storm you don’t do the same thing with a bigger pile.

Welcome to 2018. Everyone has a cell phone. Everyone is the self-appointed Neighborhood Watch Captain.

It doesn’t exactly help your case that you were, in fact, doing something illegal. Only bad things are going to happen. Besides leaving giant frozen plow cookies for someone to hit, the other issue with people pushing plow snow across the roads into the far ditch is that sooner or later the plow truck driver forgets to look when pushing out into the road. Or an oncoming driver T-bones the plow truck because they weren’t expecting to see another vehicle sitting crossways in the road.

Dutch it was probably your wife. Maybe she’s trying to get you locked up until you stop talking about new boats. ;-)

FWIW plow drivers revenge is usually leaving you with 10 times the snow in your driveway and/or an obliterated mailbox.

Hell, they don’t need to be seeking revenge for this one. The plow played golf with my mailbox yesterday. I had to gave up one of my 5 gallon buckets, filled with sand, to hold onto my shattered mailbox post until Spring.
